Why the are the manuscript submission systems of academic journals so shite - are they're stuck in 1998?
I'm on my third attempt to submit a thing. You'd think for all the money these journals make they could update their submission platforms!

With the advent of AI weather forecasting, forecasting is changing. Maybe it's no longer *just* about building better models - it's about extracting more value from the ecosystem of models we already have access to?

👉 AI weather models still have errors/biases and needs post-processing
📌 Use post-processing as the integration point to safely bring AI weather models into national met services

This is AI2ES, my AI institute. No way around it other than to say this is really awful. We are doing so many amazing things! We want to keep doing amazing things but without this level of funding, we will not be able to do so.

If you've heard something about Antarctica's sea ice melting but are not sure why that matters, you won't get a clearer explanation than this web story.👇

A few minutes very well spent.

This is illegal impoundment, plain and simple.

For those who don’t know, Unidata is an IT services center for weather and climate research. They create software and maintain data streams that I, and hundreds of other meteorologists, use on a daily basis. #nsfdata

Have you ever looked at a weather map online? Or seen a nice visualization of weather forecast model output? If so, NSF Unidata almost certainly made that possible in one way or another.

Modern meteorological education would not be possible without the data, tools, and resources they provide.

This is really not good... many scientists around the world rely on unidata tools or products (think 'netcdf')... 😟 #science

Opinion | Libraries can help end the culture wars. That’s why they’re under fire. Nothing threatens authoritarianism like a free, quiet place to absorb a full range of information.

We are about to enter an era of extreme and dangerous culture war in the United States. How do we protect our communities and work toward a cultural ceasefire? In this piece I wrote a couple months ago, I offer one possible path. wapo.st/40q1BDn

The deferment has ended. Fire expert, Prof David Bowman being very direct about what the climate- change driven Californian fires mean for Australia. Our cities are just as vulnerable as LA. Canberra 2003 fires demonstrated this, but more that 20 years on, we have put more fuel on the risk of fire.

🚨 It is now 100% certain that 2024 will be the hottest year on record and likely the hottest year in many thousands of years. With 9 days remaining in 2024, the only way to not break the record would require global cold not experienced since the Pleistocene. 🔥

Do most people in the weather community not realize how shaky the foundations of our weather and climate modeling infrastructure are right now? We can’t run CPU only models at high resolution without blowing power budgets. So what next?
