A short written preview of the VILE DEED, chapter two text: "‘I’ll keep watch,’ I told Naius when he had laid down. ‘I don’t trust him.’ Never mind that the old Monk had disappeared promptly to a cot behind a curtain and had begun to snore soundly before we had so much as dressed our beds. ‘You’ll be tired in the morning.’ ‘I won’t.’ ‘Keep sharp then, if you mean to stay up,’ he said, though I knew he was only humoring me. Then he went to sleep. After a short while, it was as if I were alone there in the dormitory with only Naius’ brother's sword in my bed for company. No moonlight fell there; once I blew out the lamp beside us, only darkness lingered. Eventually, the old monk’s breathing lowered. It seemed to stop completely, and then to saw again, and then to go quiet again all in a rhythm like the soft thumping of my spirit inside me. I waited, as one does, for a ghost. I imagined him coming across the tired garden plot and shuffling, brittle, through the room where the skete’s monks had once supped together in fellowship and now lay empty. If he meant to appear then I knew he must arrive by standing in the doorway, that blacker patch of air beyond the curtain of the farthest unused cell. I looked into it for as long as I was able. Slowly, I believe I saw him there. He was a shape in the dark. He was the chalk taste of dust on the air. ‘Go home,’ I whispered. ‘You’ve done your duty. There’s no work for you here.’"

Yeah this looks like shadow self pub (the publishing press co has only published his books). I can see a case like this where some people are just genuinely VERY BAD at spotting ai stuff / relying on the credentials of the artist. The artist has a robust portfolio for major pubs.

If it's through a traditional publisher, the answer is often 'no, because the author doesn't really get a say what the cover looks like'.
