Our first piece in the series is about The Block Club, which is redefining what a “third space” looks like in southeastern San Diego with free co-working, art shows, community events and a home base for Black creatives in the Black Arts & Culture District.

Research shows that the number of such places is declining, largely due to rising costs, neighborhood gentrification, car-centric development, longer work hours, a shift to a “low-trust society” and increased likelihood to “hang out” on social media.
