My first year's group would all be 40-42 years old this year, but what messes with my head even more is that a solid percentage of my colleagues at my campus now haven't even been alive for as long as I have been a teacher.

They came to speak at my campus this year, and I learned only then that a fav poem that I had shared with them then was the driving force in their decision to "take a new path" as they started high school. I am blessed to live near where I teach and get to see so many of my babies adulting! 2/2
Yep! One of my former babies now has their own business, one that started a national trend. Back when they were my student we butted heads daily - I saw great potential in their passion, but at the time, it was being used to pursue questionable goals. 1/2
At my middle school campus our admin team, during daily announcements, includes shout outs for student and staff birthdays. Staff always turn "21 today." Except one staff member last week, who indeed, turned 67. Admin couldn't resist, and you already know what the schoolwide response was.
Is there an RNS reporter in the White House press pool? Because, yes, ironic, but I really need to see the press IGNORE his insane posts and ask, "Jack Jenkins from RNS; I am not interested in your dodge post about the Pope. Rather, why is it okay to defund social services for a war you started?
First thought: 80/20 rule. Second thought: that email is missing the word "opportunity." Sorry!
And, I should add, as a tangent drifting to city names, that the city I live in was actually two cities long ago that "combined," couldn't agree on which name to keep, so went with the name, of, wait for it, the US attorney general at the time! And, the first mayor-the local funeral business owner!
Ooh! I was just about to ask the "why," so thanks! In my "metroplex" there is a tiny area, just a few blocks in width & length, that was it's "own city" for decades for the sole purpose of businesses that sold alcohol in a Southern/Red state. But these days, I'm 10 minutes from many such businesses.
OMG! Thank you for sharing this! I missed it. And, been watching this in real time for the last 28 yrs (given that I have been teaching the same 3 courses in the same school all that time). My lessons are almost exclusively paper/pencil. The only tech comes from Desmos, & Canvas houses my notes.
When I get to this lesson, I tell my 8th Graders that we are going to "get radical" today. Only a few appreciate the joke. A few also delight in bringing up, so "Ms. 7thMath lied to us when they told us the radical symbol was a square root symbol." My reply, "they just didn't share everything."
Yep. Reason 2 was the shift to an online version - which was a terrible experience both as a participant & facilitator, then not being allowed to opt out of facilitating that version. Reason 3 was my parents declining health, making it tougher for me to do work travel. I miss it, but at peace on it.
I had a summer side gig for 16 yrs that I LOVED. It WAS a set pay based on your experience & "# of sessions"(x amount for each session). Last 2 I did they shifted to an "hourly" system, where you had to log in all you did - but, still, essentially, got the base pay. 1 of 3 why its no longer a gig.
It's the annual tradition of giving my student's "brownies" for today's holiday celebration! You might have heard their groans earlier today!
Plot Against America too (a fav and relevant). And, if you haven't heard it, try to find the podcast Peter Sagal did with David Simon about every one of those episodes. You get to be inside his head and learn freakish random details about every episode.
#facts! The number of people who try to tell me it's The Sopranos wears me out!
Agreed. It's already "the curriculum" of many college courses and a judge even used dialogue from an episode in their decision.
Yes, and Season 2, hated in "real time" was, in reality, ahead of it's time (ditto Season 5 about media).
When you finish Treme, jump into The Deuce. It's The Wire and Treme, but 1970's NY prostitution.
..."origins of life," starting with how we defined life, all it's existing and possibly existing forms. We also studied the origins of religions, and language, and culture. No UFOs (lol). That prism allows me to make sense of your "jump" from one field to the other.
Wanna-be lawyer (from childhood) here who ended up with a degree in International Relations, but is a middle school math teacher (for 28 years now). My fav class in college was "Search for Intelligent Life" which a bunch of idiots thought would be "UFOs." Instead it was a class that explored the 1/2
Only a few of you will appreciate the GENIUS of this student's answer. Never mind that it was assessing if they could use Desmos for both quadratic regression and evaluating functions (five parts). This strategy only requires two steps while still using Desmos. Touché Alg I Wizard! #criticalthinker
Same! It will be late before we know "who wins" because, again, due to "new rules" set by R's voters have to vote at their EXACT precinct location (before and for early voting you could vote at any location). The online system to learn where to vote crashed & judges have extended the close times.
...Sharia law in Texas!" If you are not already familiar, Google EPIC City & read about all of the roadblocks that plan has faced and why. And,"school vouchers" will be a new thing next school year. I'll give you one guess as to the kind of private schools automatically being denied into the "pool."
I get myself into similar situations. For the same reasons. My younger sister converted to the Muslim faith over 30 years ago. And I have friends and colleagues (and family) who, assume the worst of such a choice. It's even worse now. The R's in Texas are all campaigning about "not allowing...(1/2)
My husband & I always throw down "two things can be true at the same time" in those discussions with others.
Yep. I tended to my invalid mother for 18 years, & in every hospital stay, the ONLY daily constant was the chaplain. And the no-nonsense one we got when it was time for hospice & her passing was a blessing. One of my former students, an old soul at 13, wanted to be a hospital chaplain. I hope he is.
Happy Fri-YAY to me! After a long week, one of my Muslim students gifted sweets from their families "breaking of the fast" (for Ramadan). With respect towards their faith practices, I waited until sundown to share these delicacies with the hubby! Chocolate dates yum! #themoreyouknowthemoreyougrow
My middle school campus "stole" your idea after I shared it & have gone schoolwide doing this approx. every 2 weeks. My math students are required to CC me. So far, the home adults are LOVE it (many reply back to their child with encouragements). Like Marcus, never going back!
