I just got done watching a truly horrible movie at Sundance ("The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist"). It was introduced by the Sundance programming rep as having "a strong sense of informational integrity", but it's hard to imagine a characterization more off the mark.
A long thread 🧵>>

I finally watched this. The data and the tech are horrifying. @drtanksley.bsky.social’s research and pedagogy, however, are incredible — themselves a reminder of how GREAT great scholarship is. Just so, so good. Truly, everyone pls watch this — to learn about the bad and to be reminded of the good.

Can’t say how important this panel excerpt with @drtanksley.bsky.social is—particularly, IMO, for teachers using grading/anti-cheating programs run by AI.
“Anti-Blackness is the algorithm meant to solve the problem of Black life.”

Holy f@$k!
“ChatGPT exhibits the highest level of anti-Black racism ever experimentally recorded.”
This whole video is jaw-dropping.

Link to the Penn study mentioned, demonstrating the ineffectiveness and disempowering consequences of ChatGPT study tools (even in the best iteration, with safeguards & teacher input, the study tools are no better than traditional study methods): knowledge.wharton.upenn.edu/article/with...

This wide-ranging response from Dr @drtanksley.bsky.social on AI inadequacies & profound harms in education, reinforcement of racism, anti-blackness, dehumanisation & inequality, & the health & environmental harms of the AI industry is a terrific listen
And universities have signed on to this 🤬

Research Brief: Teens, Trust, and Technology in the Age of AI
In an era when artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly embedded in everyday life, teens are navigating complex challenges around trust, authenticity, and online safety.
Pleased to see Common Sense has released a report I co-authored with my former colleagues on the impact of experiences with misleading or fake online information among teens and how those experiences can diminish broader trust in online information. www.commonsensemedia.org/research/res...

Moving from something that is known and held in the body, to something that is written and distilled into words on a page is never an easy journey, but it's definitely one worth taking

In the depths of a new piece on anti-blackness in AI + Education & I have to say:
The slow & deliberate labor of untangling a theoretical knot that's been quietly guiding my work for years is both exhilarating & excruciatingly painful.
