Applying machine-learning and deep-learning to predict depression from brain MRI and identify depression-related brain biology - Translational Psychiatry Translational Psychiatry - Applying machine-learning and deep-learning to predict depression from brain MRI and identify depression-related brain biology

Happy to share our latest paper, the work of @clarajiang.bsky.social who trained brain-based predictors of depression on the UK Biobank (N=7,500 curated cases and matched controls) using AI/deeplearning as well as efficient statistical learning (BLUP).

See thread below for a summary of findings

Heavily recommended, some of the most rewarding experiences I ever had at the OHBM were at the BrainHack and the Open Science Room. Apply even if unsure, you'll have the opportunity to have a chat with OSSIG members and get to ask questions, or send me a DM if in doubt! 🙂

For me, this work is a classic @ohbmofficial.bsky.social story: In 2023 I wasn't working with @bttyeo.bsky.social but I overheard him at his poster pointing to some accuracy curves saying "I don't why they have this particular shape". That kicked off the collab that led to these results.

Null and Noteworthy: Neurons tracking sequences don’t fire in order Instead, neurons encode the position of sequential items in working memory based on when they fire during ongoing brain wave oscillations—a finding that challenges a long-standing theory.

The neurons that encode sequential information into working memory do not fire in that same order during recall, a finding that is at odds with a long-standing theory. Read more in this month’s Null and Noteworthy.
