Little break from the parental leave silence: Check out our new study led by the amazing @danielaguasconi.bsky.social! We found that integrating microbial diversity information with abiotic drivers enhances the prediction of respiration rates in managed Scots pine forests.

Really pleased to see this work published. The study was led by Elisa Bruni as a collaborative result from the #HoliSoils project. Check it out here: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

9 months ago 1 0 0 0

Elisa found that respiration rates scale as the product of organic carbon and microbial biomass, with minimal effects of microbial diversity. This is a cool result, supporting the use of nonlinear kinetics to interpret data at small scales (lab incubation). Great @holisoils.bsky.social team effort!

Highlighted event: Opening up about Mental Health across Career Stages in the Geosciences EGU 2025 is almost upon us! While a highlight of the year for many scientists, a big conference like this can also come with feelings of stress or anxiety for many. (If that’s you – you are not alone!...

Attending #EGU @egu.eu & care about mental health & diversity in academia? Join our Union Symposium Monday, 16:15–18:00 in Room E1. Key message on management of drained forested peatlands from the @holisoils.bsky.social‬ policy brief below: "Avoiding clearcutting and applying continuous cover forestry on peatlands allows timber production with a higher water level [...], which can reduce GHG emissions"

@mpallandt.bsky.social and I were awarded financial support through the new EGU EDI Participation Support Scheme, to bring our child to #EGU25. This enables EC scientists to attend without monetary punishment for having children and no local support system. I hope more such initiatives will follow!

A graph of atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations at the Mauna Loa observatory, Hawaii, from 1958 to 4th February 2025. It shows carbon dioxide levels rising at an accelerating rate over the decades. This is known to be due to emissions of carbon dioxide from human activity, mainly fossil fuel burning but also deforestation. The first CO2 concentration value in March 1958 was 315 parts per million (ppm). The latest daily value is 426 ppm. The graph also shows a seasonal cycle of a few ppm within each year, which is known to be linked to the growing season in the northern hemisphere causing a temporary uptake of carbon in spring and summer and release in autumn. The graph is produced routinely by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego.

So maybe a climate ecologist - is that even a thing? C cycle researcher? Maybe it's a small problem to have, but I feel like none of the above really covers it. Multidisciplinary Bluesky community, how would you answer this question? (2/2)

1 year ago 0 0 1 0

Scientific identity crisis: "So, what do you do?" A simple question, but I struggle to answer after changing fields several times. Am I a vegetation modeller? Soil modeller? Does that then make me a land surface modeller? But my postdoc isn't like that, I'm analysing soil respiration datasets (1/2)

This is a really important topic! My career path is highly nonlinear. Long-term illness forced me to take a break from academia. Add having a child and moving across Europe several times with my partner who's also in science, and those age restrictions for early career scientists seem laughable...
