So much is extraordinarily dreadful about Trump's regime, and here's just one (truly dreadful) example.

The media have developed a bad habit, fed by 10 years of psychodramas with Brexit, Johnson, Truss, et al. They've (mostly) lost their sense of the civic good.

The cruel misinformation of a data status indicator on your mobile that says "5G", when in fact there is no 5G, not even 1G.

Yup, this media framing is monotonously fixated. But it doesn't stop govt ministers from taking the interview by the scruff of the neck and articulating some bold short and longer term strategies. Problem is the govt is so averse to bold strategy.

Tom Paine in Our Time: Common Sense at 250 with Joe Rezek - Boston Athenaeum

You can watch my Boston Athenaeum lecture on the 250th anniversary of Common Sense on their website, linked here. It's a little Boston-centered, a very local talk! But with themes that resonate broadly, I do believe. And quite a lively crowd.

The Strategic Defence Review, which Robertson spearheaded, came out in September 2025, as I was writing the last chapter of my book, which is focused on foreign policy and strategy. I read that entire document and interviewed a number of experts about it. A few thoughts. 🧵

FT Correction:

Researcher Brené Brown was misquoted in an interview published on April 6. She described herself as “solidly in my fuck it era” rather than “solidly in my fucking era”.

The Etymological Problem with Apples I remain resolute in the belief that ordinary, ten-a-penny words are far more interesting than the rare jewels and prized flowers of any language’s lexicon. Miss me with your petrichor an…

If you'd welcome a windfall of historical language and etymology, all connected to the humble English word 'apple', then boy, do I have a new article for you.

The star word leads us into the murkiest prehistory of English and the debate over an absent consonant.
