I wrote a paper on Vampirism in Mesoamerica before and at European contact, but half of it derailed into snarling about Diego de Landa and the horrors he brought and arguments on why his accounts should be read with suspicion.

I hope to one day have the brain function to overhaul and do it better.

1. Immune system not pitching an absolute temper tantrum in response to vaccine.

I think it's also a factor that you came into as a shared and beloved family experience. It sounds like your folks were fluent in it--which meant more opportunities for informed discussion, able to raise points or questions.... even just offhand remarks would have an effect.

I had an anthropology professor toss that one at us, and it resulted in a multitude of answers--almost all of whom were shocked to learn anyone else did it differently than how they grew up.

Unfortunately, my hands being messed up effectively made me mumble in ASL, and it was often painful to use... after conversations with the professor, I didn't go for subsequent semesters.

I just wanted to let you know that this has been rippling across my Final Fantasy XIV friends' posts, and it's been a delight to see this facet of my gaming friends. Everyone's quoting the person they saw it from and it's a fantastic chain to follow back through.
