It's great when people in real life go "yeah I'm still working on X and Y, cause of my dad", but if a character says that in fiction then you're just reading Bible stories. No one says what they mean, all the time. Give us some flaws and blind spots so we can have complex feelings about them.

The best thing you can do for your writing is to give a character this kind of flaw or trauma, write the outline around them grappling with it, then delete the scene where they say their flaw outright and write *that* story.
