It was completely cloudy in upstate NY during the eclipse, but that didn’t put a damper on experiencing totality for nearly three minutes. What an awe-inspiring moment.

The perfect ice cream combo is a 60/40 split of cookies & cream and coffee. There is no other correct answer.

The Council On Undergraduate Research is soliciting self-nominations for division representatives (Due Jan 3). CUR supports folks who mentor undergraduate researchers. Becoming a division rep is a great way to share your love for undergraduate research!

You could absolutely rock these. I vote yes.

Pet tax:
Sure, kids get up early on Christmas morning. You know who gets up earlier? My geriatric beagle (hungry at baseline) on prednisone (hungrier) who eats a low-protein prescription diet (she’s the hungriest). The 3am hangries are real, and so are the bags under my eyes 🥱
Ugh I just really love cheese. All of it.
Your regular reminder that we, your professors, LOVE IT when you email us after the fact to let us know what you're up to. Truly one of the most gratifying parts of this work.
I was feeling bad about doing a subpar job of teaching enough content in my advanced stats course this semester.
Then two students came to office hours and demonstrated tremendous growth in both skill & confidence compared to where they started.
A nice reminder that less is often much, much more.
I wear winter boots in to my building from the parking lot, then change into "indoor" shoes when I arrive. After debating with a colleague about whether this is an odd practice (it's not!), it dawned on me: I'm becoming Mr. Rogers.
Three round pies with golden brown crusts; from left to right, a pumpkin pie with a dark brown perimeter, a pecan pie with pie crust leaf decorations, and an intricately woven lattice topped apple pie.
It's time to share my annual over-the-top fancy pie photos. Bourbon cinnamon pecan, home-grown apple with lattice top, and pumpkin with ginger snap crust. Not my best work, but a strong showing nonetheless.
If you’re a cognitive psychologist, there’s @psychonomicsociety.bsky.social. They’re on Blue Sky too. We just had our annual conference, which was great!
And @sparksociety.bsky.social a group working to increase diversity in cognitive science is here.
And @cogscisociety.bsky.social
Just imagine all the angry e-mails from the people who think the gorilla is missing from their set.
Does your ability to learn from a lecture take a hit when your neighbor is playing games on their iPad? Does screen orientation impact this kind of distraction?
Come see us at @psychonomicsociety.bsky.social poster session (3016) Friday at 6pm to find out!
This is my first in-person Psychnomics since Montreal. It is so good to be back!
Mega-kudos to the organization for the warm welcome to undergrads. My student is having a life-changing experience, and it's really great to see it unfold here.
We miss you! See you next year?
Psychonomics starts next week and we still don't have hashtags, so I created a new feed to capture posts.
bsky.app/profile/did:...
All posts with "psynom23" (the official hashtag), "psynomnom" (tag for food recommendations), or "psychonomic" (psychonomics also works) will show up on the feed.
Another reason to work at Fisher? Two excellent soup choices every single day. Today, I filled up my soup loyalty card with the final punch, and my next soup is *free*. Broccoli cheddar never tasted so good.
Anywho, APPLY to work with us!
Signal boost! We're hiring two TT faculty for Fall 2024. Excellent teaching environment, awesome colleagues, beautiful campus (with the best campus food in New York State). Please share! #psychscisky
I totally get it. I try to remember that my teaching load is the equivalent of performing a one-woman Broadway show for a small audience 3x/week. All good artists need some reflective/quiet time...you're no different!
Don't discount the tremendous amount of work it takes to do all the dynamic stuff that teaching involves. Being "on" for that long is exhausting! Refilling your tank/cup/reserves is a priority.
Yes! On both this website and in life in general. She's got it figured out.
A small white and brown beagle sits in front of a red house on a wooden deck amidst large orange, white, and green pumpkins. There are pink, purple, and white mums interspersed.
This website doesn't have nearly enough dog content yet. So here's Kevin the Wonderbeagle's sun-kissed autumn portrait.
There is a “centre” where the money, the fame, is; most likely your proposal gets funded because it’s on the most favourable topic. Maybe today, RNA is [most favourable]. If you are working with mRNA, maybe that's the centre there. And then there are people in the periphery. There is no fame, there is no money, no nothing there. The only thing in the periphery is freedom. You can do what you like to do, what you feel is important. Here’s what a proposal is: why they should give me money. And they should question that. “She came from university nobody knew about.” “She never had a mentor who was famous.” And somehow it gravitates always to the same people, same circle. They get published there, they get the money. And that's another explanation: I was not famous enough or didn't have anybody who would support me in a way that somebody that’s a famous and well-established scientist stands behind you and says, “Oh, look at this, it’s good.”

Folks, celebrate your friends. I know you probably know this, but it's easy to forget. Take joy in their successes and cheer on their moments in the sun, and always let them know they make your life better. It matters.
