There's music built right into our language, but it's so poorly represented in media, especially certain media that I otherwise love, and it's a hard pill to swallow.

Anyway, I was reminded tonight of how much I love the variety and musicality of Caribbean patois and dialects and how much trauma I carry because of it, and how it's perceived and inaccurately presented outside the Caribbean.

I'd get a lot of Oreo jokes for it when using "The Queen's English" Bahamians with much thicker accents and then in college if even a little slipped out I might as well have been wearing a skirt made out of palm fronds to the white kids in my classes.

Something I don't think about too often anymore is how my school (primary->highschool) in The Bahamas went out of their way to drill out any semblance of an accent and I had to fight to hold onto the dialect outside of school when I spent time with friends and family.
