The dynamic nature of floods is highlighted in this animation using open data from the Radarsat Constellation Mission highlights. NRCan processing data coming out of the Canadian space program that's allowing us to track changing flood extents through cloud cover.

For my friends in #WA and #OR who are looking for #earthquake information - see the newly designed Pacific Northwest Seismic Network (PNSN) website:

With information on earthquakes, volcanoes and much more.
A great site for those of us in southern #BritishColumbia and northern #CA also!

An important part of creating the foundational tools for #flood management (maps and risk assessments) is observed data. We've been posting here on the fantastic satellite data that is now available to record flood extents. It ideally needs to be complemented with on-the-ground data collection.
Calling out for help from citizen scientists! If you are in a #bcflood zone and can SAFELY help the flood science community out, download the University of Zurich CrowdWater app to take pictures of virtual water levels and water pollutants. Download for IOS + Google: crowdwater.ch/en/app-start...
Building on our post yesterday highlighting and appreciating how big data and real-time data have drastically improved in the last few years, it is awesome to highlight a different resource (RCM-1) post-processed by Natural Resources Canada. There is much we can do with these new tools! #bcflood
This summary of recent government policy choices is on point. The non-funding of the BC Flood Strategy may not have changed outcomes in this event, but surely this will be the wake up call to ensure we don’t repeat it.
With floodwaters on the ground (or coming) in our client's communities, we are grateful to have new public large data tools to help support decision making. The Sentinel-1 mission data pass from the last couple of days is one such tool. See the data for yourself: lnkd.in/gGFMzsJv #bcflood
Had to shrink the candles on our now "hotly anticipated" year-in-review graphic. That's because ebbwater turns 12 today. The density of lit candles is inching towards being its own hazard!
We are continuing to learn and unlearn as we prep for our teenage years. Happy Birthday to us ;)
We felt that. Did you? #bcearthquake. Our team is well practiced for earthquake through bi-annual drills and post drill debriefs. Your team should be too.
« The most affordable home is one you don’t have to rebuild. ». Such a good framing of the nexus of natural hazards and the housing crisis. Let’s do something about it!

Canada has just released a long-awaited update to Disaster Financial Assistance (#DFAA). Moving slowly in the right direction, but we still don't have all the information. www.linkedin.com/posts/ebbwat...
Bar chart showing annual global mean temperatures above preindustrial times from 1980 to present, with larger numbers and darker red colours in recent years including 2024 crossing 1.5 degrees Celsius and 2025 forecast a little less than that.
Colleagues at ECCC are forecasting 1.45 ± 0.10°C above pre-industrial levels for 2025, slightly cooler than the record high temperature of 1.55°C of 2024 but virtually certain to be hotter than every year on record prior to 2023 #climatechange

Solid principles for relocation in the face of climate #risks in this US report. We especially like the ideas of equity and inclusiveness. There's a lot of places in Canada that could apply these as we begin to have difficult conversations about managed #retreat.

Check out this starter pack for the #flood risk reduction and resilience community! Thanks for the add, @ebbwater.bsky.social 😁 Still trying to get used to things around here 🌊
Cartoon map of the Cascadia subduction zone showing the major tectonic plates, including the North American plate, the Pacific plate, and the smaller oceanic plates (Explorer, Juan de Fuca and Gorda - from north to south) that are being pushed beneath North America. The location of today's M7 earthquake at the south end of this system is shown as a star. Today's earthquake was not a subduction earthquake and was not on the San Andreas Fault but rather on an E-W trending fault zone that separates the Gorda and Pacific plates.
Today's M7.0 earthquake off northern California was not a subduction earthquake, but is an important reminder for us in Cascadia (northern CA to northern Vancouver Island) that different types of large earthquakes occur here. Know what to do when the shaking begins ⚒️🧪

In this piece with Radio-Canada, principal @tamsinlyle.bsky.social spoke about the importance of investments in watershed restoration and protection as something "we" have control over and that will reduce flood hazard severity and therefore flood damages.

Critical natural areas shield half of Canada's population from flooding, a new study has found.
B.C. & Quebec — two particularly wet and forested places — receive the most natural flood protection.

The themes were to: expect more and more costly events in future, focus more on planning before events rather than paying for them afterwards, and finally to consider difficult decisions around planned retreat.
Feels hopeful that the media is picking up on this challenge!
Ebb's principal @tamsinlyle.bsky.social spoke this morning
to Radio Canada's west coast morning show on the Disaster Financial Assistance programs and the parallel private hazard insurance offerings:
