Kirstie Ken in the library wearing a pigeon jumper
Finishing up in the main reading room. Only written about 650 words across two papers but given they are co-authored, I had to get some reading done for them & I’m knackered from BSA that’s not bad 😅
May do a little more writing later. If i get a second wind.

A big old library room
A desk set up with an iPad & keyboard and other writing tools
Finished up #britsoc26 with mine & @harveyhumphrey.bsky.social talk on how we incorporate our queer approaches in our methods teaching.
Now I’ve taken myself to the Gladstone residential library for a wee solo writing retreat weekend.
Have two paper deadlines coming up I hope to have a bash at
Needless to say if the UK facilitates the US in committing genocide tonight we need to be subject to the full force of international sanction
it's a tiny thing we can do but it is actually something we can do
tell them to tell the UK government to ban US war planes from this country immediately
Almost 8 hours now. That’s a lot of complicity.
I did bring that green shirt but will not wear it on the Friday to show I own more than one shirt to 😂

Speaking at #britsoc26 this week✨
Thursday: Discussing my chapter on Scotland’s census in @yvettetaylor.bsky.social book Queer in a Wee Place.
Friday: @harveyhumphrey.bsky.social & I will present how our queer approaches inform our teaching of social research methods
Been reading a lot on AI resently. Planning to spend part of the summer writing through my thoughts on it. Might share something on issues surrounding its application in social research methods training and higher ed generally.
The audiobook cover for the Ai con
On my way to Manchester for BSA con & started listening to this. Was lucky enough to be on a panel with @alexhanna.bsky.social years back at the CPDP con. Was excited to see she co authored this!
Sassy the greyhound sleeping next to a laptop with power point slides on them
BSA slides sorted. If your about on the Friday afternoon come listen to @harveyhumphrey.bsky.social & I share how we incorporate queer approaches into our methods teaching and why that matters✨ @britsoci.bsky.social

Spent this evening working on my contribution for the @transunityquilt.bsky.social .
Largest version of Pat the pigeon yet!
Had a good meeting with some new dissertation students. Feel like I’m getting better at supervision which is nice 😊

The GLINTS patch for the trans unity quilt is coming along nicely. @harveyhumphrey.bsky.social made me laugh when we were trying to pose with it😅
This is so well deserved! @notrightruth.bsky.social is not only an outstanding academic & formidable activist but also extremely generous. She was a very supportive PhD examiner. Since then having her as my colleague & friend has made my time as an early career trans academic much easier.

The contents page shopping Kirstie Ken’s chapter on chapter 5 called the construction of Scotlan’d LGBTQ+ population in the census
Wild to have a chapter in a book Jackie Kay liked 🤩
Thank you @yvettetaylor.bsky.social for including me in this fantastic collection!
My chapter presents Scotland’s 2022 census as world leading for LGBTQ+ representation while argueing this hasn’t translated to positive outcomes for us.
Not used Grammerly in a while since they started using user content to train their AI. Presenting suggested edits as if they are from specific folk without their consent is wild!

Honestly it’s dangerous how good the MakerSpace is. I might just live there now 🤩
Was great getting to work on our square for the unity quilt today!
Heart hurts seeing the fire in town. Last thing the city needs. The Glasgow firefighters all deserve a raise. They are out to work far too often.
One of the questions in our @rainbowr.org 📊 workshop, was "could you make the beeswarm chart interactive?" 🐝 The answer is "yes, you can" and here's how: nrennie.rbind.io/blog/interac...
#RStats #DataViz #ggplot2 #VisLGBTQ
One of these situations where I can’t tell if it’s a privacy breach by design or if it’s just another example of how poorly thought out The Online Safty Act is.
Gov is a hop skip and a jump from requiring every adult to provide credit card or photo ID info to access the internet…primarily via third party organisations. Nothing could go wrong here 🙃
Beeswarm chart showing distribution of percentage of people in each local authority in England and Wales who reported bad or very bad health, by sexual orientation. Gay or Lesbian / Straight or Heterosexual are similar and lowest groups. Highest and highest variability is "all other sexual orientations".
Inspired by #TidyTuesday & LGBTQ+ History Month myself and @kenglish.bsky.social are challenging people to produce visualisations using UK census data on LGBTQ+ people 📊
Share your #DataViz and code via GitHub or on here using #VisLGBTQ
Here's one we made in today's @rainbowr.org workshop 🐝
Ha ha sorry pal I was trying to compliment but it didn’t come out that way 😅 Love your boots!
If your question is so unclear to require this much guidance it is probably time to consider if you're asking the right question.
I shared this to empathise that even if you want to force trans people into ill fitting boxes many wont play ball. If you want to produce reliable data work with your participants not against.
