To accompany my textbook (Computational Foundations of Cognitive Neuroscience) and the class I taught this semester, I'm open-sourcing my lectures slides:

I'll continue to update these as I improve them.

Common feature selection practices may capture only the “tip of the iceberg” of distributed brain–behavior relationships
Specifically, typically discarded features can predict behavior just as well as top-ranked ones, yet produce diverging interpretations

Speechless.
Widely considered the MIT of Iran, Sharif has given the US some of its best engineers, and some of my most talented (and kind, and thoughtful) colleagues—some of whom who have chosen the US as their home.
Useful piece on AI in academic training:
“The instinct[…]comes from years of failing at exactly the kind of work that people keep calling grunt work. Making the models smarter doesn't solve the problem. It makes the problem harder to see.”

📢 Late-breaking poster submissions for FIT’NG 2026 are open.
👉 If you’re going to ICIS (@infantstudies.bsky.social), why not submit to FIT’NG, which begins the day after!
📝 Work presented at FIT’NG will reach our rich community of neuroscientists studying early brain development.

Food for thought regarding the tradeoff in reducing structured vs. unstructured noise when we’re dealing with subtle signals

Meant to tag @alexkfischbach.bsky.social @halleeshearer.bsky.social @strfabs.bsky.social 🙌
A bit belated, but it was such a pleasure seeing the lab showcase all their excellent hard work at #CNS2026! Go team!! 🚀
(+ guest appearance from @psycheloui.bsky.social ‘s awesome lab)
NIH is requesting comments on a new draft policy that may require human brain imaging data (and other data) from nih-funded research to only be shared via controlled access, & only with certain countries. I suggest neuroimagers read closely & submit comments by 3/18.

Correction: data blitz is at 10:30 AM 🙃
Graph of award probability of R35 and R01 from NIH factbook as a function of review rank percentile. As is apparent, 2025 is a significant departure, with lower award probabilities at all scores <40 and significant departures from norm, where even being in the top 10% is no longer a nearly certain indicator of success. Data source: https://report.nih.gov/nihdatabook/report/302
The data is in: the NIH goalposts have shifted.
What were once almost certain fundable scores have become coin flips and what used to be likely grants have become aspirational, leading to fewer awards.
Another manifestation of how HHS policies have led to fewer awards and less science.

A good day to appreciate those who support women scientists too 💪🏽
🚨Thrilled to share I am able to hire someone (PhD preferred) with coding expertise to work on our HAPPE software for EEG! Knowledge of Matlab, Python, and EEG signal processing required. Enthusiasm for teaching/mentoring, collaboration, and developmental science preferred!
The act of writing is fundamental to science, because the process is what makes people think. You cannot fully evaluate your idea until you are forced to write it down and defend it to yourself, and to the readers in your head. There is no shortcut for that. There is no way to make science easy.
I wrote this song on Saturday, recorded it yesterday and released it to you today in response to the state terror being visited on the city of Minneapolis. It’s dedicated to the people of Minneapolis, our innocent immigrant neighbors and in memory of Alex Pretti and Renee Good.

Holy cow. This will be super useful for accelerating the development of all kinds of projects and methods from UKB—huge kudos to everyone in this team that made it happen (and the broader UKB team too)!

Some really good tips here. Wish I had learned number 3 earlier, or ever for that matter 🥲
