Like the whole speech about laboratores while annoying the peasants makes sense to him because he cannot be seen outside of his noble status bc nobility rly is all about appearances a lot of the time.

he is that self absorbed(he is to some extent) but because otherwise he would not be taken seriously at all. like he has no clout outside his title and we see him often deflate around people he can trust.

on a replay im also noticing that like. a lot of his behavior that reads as childish or stuck up while it is to our eyes in this century(because rich kids acting like that would b obnoxious) he often feels like he sort of "tries to appear bigger" than he is not because
