Contributor: ICE raids and migrant pay cuts are devastating California economies Many of the harms of recent immigration enforcement are incalculable. But researchers have put a number on the economic toll in Southern California's agricultural communities.

"Early research quantifying the economic impact of ICE raids in Oxnard estimates direct crop losses of $3 billion to $7 billion with significant spillover into other sectors of the economy."

Jade cups, Maya, Tikal, Guatemala, ~800CE, linked to the ruler Jasaw Chan K'awiil, probably a son or brother of this ruler. On the right the Maize God, symbolizing regeneration and the cycle of life. The cups were for ritual drinks, such as cacao, for the ruler on his journey to the underworld.

Wrestlers on this silver stater from Aspendos (400–300 BC).

Ancient Greek coins often used strong, original designs, and this one captures two athletes in combat with impressive detail. Seen at Casa de la Moneda in Madrid.

The quilt design is a stylised representation or ‘evocation’ of Kelmscott Manor, standing amidst gardens and an orchard, the scene being populated by domestic and farmyard animals and poultry. This image of ordered domesticity is encircled by a river, probably the River Thames which flows within 250 metres of the Manor. The river is inhabited by fish and frogs and a crocodile climbs out onto the far bank.

Beyond the river the landscape becomes a mixture of the familiar and the more exotic - a palm tree grows amongst the vegatation and an elephant, lions and a giraffe are depicted alongside foxes, owls and a hedgehog.

For World #EarthDay we're highlighting this embroidered cot quilt, 'The Homestead and the Forest', designed by May Morris and worked by Jane Morris from 1889 - 1890.

Historical black-and-white scientific illustration depicting detailed views of two crustacean species from the Malacostraca order. The top features a large crab (Xanthodes cumatodes) with textured claws, eyes on stalks, and segmented legs, labeled at 5x magnification. Below are multiple views of Cymonomus andamanicus: a full dorsal view, ventral view with visible mouthparts, and close-ups of the carapace and claws, all intricately drawn to show fine anatomical details. The illustration is from the early 20th century Indian Marine Survey steamer Investigator, noting magnification levels and species names for scientific reference.

Aerial roots can be co-opted for defense. The trunk of the Mauritiella armata is covered with short, pointed adventitious root-spines. The species epithet is spot-on: This palm is armed. #Arecaceae #root #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

#BOTD Ottilie Wilhelmine Roederstein (22 April 1859 – 26 November 1937) was a German-Swiss painter.

She continued to paint until her death, as National Socialist policies began to marginalize modern art in Germany.
