Starmer could have postponed the visit. By confirming it, there’s no way to u-turn w/o causing massive row; so we’re stuck with this awful, humiliating spectacle, rewarding an individual who’s not just repeatedly insulted the UK but many of its Commonwealth partners, which the King supposedly heads.
I'm not into gesture politics but I think this visit should be cancelled, actually because it would be a gesture that it doesn't matter that in recent months Trump has repeatedy insulted Britain. But it does. The counter-argument is that it'd keep him sweet: it won't.
