Using a relatively low-flying drone (60 m above ground) during winter (no leaves) in a steep terrain, with 80% overlap between images, we could often detect deer under trees (seen at a sideways angle) that were hidden from a straight-above view.

We used a double observer approach which allowed us to include extra-Poisson variation in the model. If we had assumed a Poisson process for the deer distribution (as in a standard N-mixture model), we would have seriously underestimated uncertainty.
