The Pit has always been the beating heart of campus life at @uregina.bsky.social. It means a lot to me - and to so many others.
The orange shag carpet may be gone, but it’ll keep bringing people together for years to come. Honoured to be part of its re-opening.

(for clarity, I’m not arguing *for* parking - it’s just a really easy, tangible example of well-tested, off-the-shelf solutions that Regina *still* can’t bring itself to adopt… why? Who knows. We have at least TWO reports 💸 over a decade studying the options)
I agree, comparing Regina to much larger cities is apples to oranges. But even when compared to like-cities, Regina lags on SO many fronts - in large part, I think, because we dither, we try to create our own solutions, and YQRcc/Admin is risk adverse.
Inertia is a risk too.
We do have the app now, but ditch the meters altogether. They rarely work, limit the amount of parking, create needless obstacles for accessibility & basic snow clearing/removal, etc
Put in pay stations.
But even those are going away - Winnipeg is removing theirs in favour of app-only.
Calgary has dynamic pricing based on real-time demand in an area.
The City of Regina commissioned a parking study in 2015. It sat on a shelf for 3 years, only to have a committee recommend studying the options… which were by then outdated.
No meaningful measures have been taken over the decade.
No meters also means more revenue - no piggybacking on leftover time.
And potentially more cars/block bc they don’t have to align with meters (20 motorcycles vs 10 Smart cars/Minis vs 5 trucks)
Saskatoon lets you pay once & move your car to various spots downtown.
Not that parking should be the litmus test, but Regina is easily 10-15years behind literally every other major city in Canada on parking technology. Parking meters went the way of the dodo a decade ago.
Go with pay stations & apps.
I would argue that YQRcc/Admin believes reports/studying/dithering are forms of “doing things.” 🤪
Every issue doesn’t require a Regina-specific solution. Ask alllllll of the other cities that have gone before us how they handled compost; snow routes; parking; recreational infrastructure; etc…
9,000 people who can’t get register for swimming lessons!
But sure, let’s dither on whether we need a new facility.
Could we debate whether this is the *perfect* location, scope, purpose, etc? Sure.
The City/#YQRcc’s track record of dithering is jawdropping.
Inertia is a risk too.

I completely agree.
I don’t get a “we just travelled a great distance” vibe either from the crowd itself, or the chatter online. Average attendee is in Regina at least once a week all year to shop, work, etc. it’s a normal destination within a reasonable commute.
I also did not know either of these things.
Disappointed we let him have his citizenship back. Bet there are literally thousands of people who *actually* want to be Canadians.
I thought of him too… he’s not Canadian, though.
I have a friend in Calgary with Rider season tickets - comes to most games. I don’t assume this means her dedication is typical.
I agree - I think it’s the extreme cases that make him think it’s totally typical for the vast majority to drive 1.5+ hrs to games. I bet a lot of people from outside Regina come to at least 1 game/season.
But not 2/3rds of the stadium. No chance.
He was pretty adamant, based (it seems) largely on traffic that he sees on the highway.
I have season tickets, and don’t get a vibe that 2/3rds are coming from far out of town (if they were, I’d expect more no-shows with storms, or early departures on evening games).
@jgasson.bsky.social watching an argument play out on Reddit where one Redditor is arguing that 2/3rds of fans in Mosaic travel in 100km+ for games.
He’s convinced this is true - you ever seen data on something like this?
Reynolds said 50% come from 20km+…commute from Lumsden is very diff than PA.

“The Centre’s comprehensive services will provide a safe haven and essential resources for those in need, fostering healing, hope, and independence.”
Why do we need this centre? Because #Sask has the highest rates of domestic violence in #Canada. That's why.
Well done.
Check out this beauty of a home.
The location is stunning.

@robbutler.com - I thought I could figure the ‘little bit of coding’ out (fail😕) but do you think you could build a Bluesky Feed for GoC folks/topics?
Would be nice to build a bit of a community over here as well.
How on earth does morning demand for hashbrowns always catch McDonald’s off-guard?
Like, there’s a defined trendline.
…every morning, make a LOT.
I think it's a great start - migrating from my community of Saskies on 'X' has been hard. Trying to find Saskies here (or on Threads, Mastodon, etc) is like needles in a haystack. Your feed helps.
Any chance of trying to create similar feeds for Regina & Saskatoon? I could seed words for YQR.
