The city is wrong. The roads are wrong. The buildings are wrong. Down to their foundations. Every block and board.
Something changed. Something's missing.

We need to begin uniting our collections for the sake of economic efficiency and ease of maintenance.
We need to purchase land. Build a gallery.
It can be done. You must believe.

Whoops. Usually put that in the main post.

Happy birthday!
And that's the end of my wall of text. Now, back to my nsfw corner of the site.
The result of all this hard work (which I'm guilty of neglecting myself) will hopefully be more resilient web presences that allow us to demand more of service providers rather than having to hold our noses and break bread with assholes so a company in which we hold no financial stake might survive.
The long-term solution, in my opinion, is the more difficult one. People are going to need to go back to self-hosting some content. They're going to need to build presences across multiple platforms. They need to make sure they can survive the fall of any given website. (cont)
All of this is to say, making the tent bigger makes the site less useful, and if it's less useful, there's less reason to stay. It can be just one more site for power users and professionals to post, but then it really will just be an inferior Twitter. (cont)
In a way, I think the most monetizable site is also the least useful for building real community. Part of this is that, in any well-made community, there needs to be a mechanism to exclude those who aren't welcome. (cont)
I would also point out that site leadership has not given us much reason to think this place *can* be a forever home. They're more likely to protect even transphobic "power users" than they are various communties who fled here from X. (cont)
There is good reason for the communities already on Bluesky to be suspicious of anyone asking us to expand our tent for the good of the website. We've been burned before. (cont)
As for Twitter, we now know that Musk's claims of being a free speech absolutist seeking to reclaim a digital town square from an imagined authoritaeian Left were just nonsense. Twitter is the internet's official Nazi bar these days. (cont)
The end of nsfw on the former was done to make the site more appropriate for general audiences and for advertisers. It killed many of the communities that gave the site value in the first place. (cont)
Instead, my main issue is with your call to grow the tent for the sake of financial stability. Like many users, I was around for the fall of Tumblr and for Twitter's horrible transformation into The Everything App. (cont)
I think there have been valid criticisms your methods, but I don't really want to linger on that. I have sympathy for you here, since you are in the unenviable position of having to find meaningful metrics that you can use to compare this website to bot-infested competitors. (cont)
You are right to say that social media websites need to pay the bills. You're also right that services like X and Threads, with their massive backers, have an advantage over BlueSky. I'm sure a lot of us would prefer this wasn't the case, but the world's billionaires won't just vanish. (cont)
I am just a humble leftist who mostly posts nsfw stuff. I admit I sometimes like to give in to the impulse to dunk on people closer to the center than myself, but I am going to try to actually respond to you in good faith here, since I do think you've tried to improve on your original article.(cont)
Are they really trying to pull off the equivalent of British Petroleum telling you to reduce your personal carbon footprint?

My Jimmy Johns is closed.
Apparrently, we cannot have salami today, for the Lord has risen.
This does make sense. They may as well gather that data if the legal department is using it, I suppose.
I'm not watching this garbage either way, but do they actually have a way of tracking how many people pirate something?
