Opening paragraph that hits like crack
Seung Min Kim @seungminkim WASHINGTON (AP) — Trump promises strikes on Iran’s power plants and bridges on Tuesday if the Strait of Hormuz isn't reopened.

Portes is right. I have definitely come to see the value in political education, because "emotionally cathartic slopulism" has already taken over the Right and I think it could easily do so on the left too if we don't hold the line on, like, actually insisting that it matters you get things right.
The responses to that thread are so depressing. Jon Portes is pretty sympathetic to the Greens and spends half his time taking chunks out of Labour and Reform and he says one critical thing about a topic he is a professional expert in and immediately he's just persona non grata for Green supporters.
Just realised it was posted yesterday so might be an April fools?
Feel like I'm going insane reading that thread and the replies. What the fuck are they talking about?
At least with COVID and the fuck ups in handling it there was a sense that there were a lot of very smart people spending a lot of time and money trying to resolve it. In this case everyone involved is a malevolent moron and/or a malevolent fanatic.
Just a disastrously bad decision to start this war all round. I'm also keeping my fingers crossed the worst doesn't come to pass but looking at the various people involved it's hard to be hopeful that there will be a quick resolution at the moment.
Here's hoping, thanks.
Ok. Thanks for responding. Can't wait to explain to a three year old that her dad is literally unable to come see her anymore, thanks Trump.
I take regular flights to Copenhagen to see my young daughter, is it basically your view that there is a strong possibility that these flights will become prohibitively expensive and my already-booked flights up to and including July will be cancelled?
the rise of the incel and the rise of the strongman are two connected and mutually reinforcing responses to the evils of modernity. new post
In Trump we've got the most transparent President in history in terms of saying what he's thinking and talking to journalists on the record.
And it's entirely useless because what's happening in his brain is a monkey playing cymbols.

Well, mate, the problem here, right, is it says oceans are now battlefields, right? *Oceans*. And what you’ve got here, see, is a *strait*, right? Not under the warranty, then, see? Sorry, mate, can’t be done. Completely different parts.
Dear, oh dear. Cowboys…
This story is insane. Married an American, arrested at her greencard interview, flown out of state, nearly killed multiple times when her diabetes was ignored and then mistreated. When she finally got out? Found out her credit card had been used illegally. www.daylightsandiego.org/san-diego-wo...
Circle as big as how much your account gets interacted with on X, and Elon Musk is a huge dot in the middle dwarfing everything else like the sun
This is just an incredible visual model of what being on X is like
Nah we had houses at my state school in Scotland in the 90s, so it's not only private schools that do it.
Every day the Pentagon makes a video of cool explosions from Iran for the president of the United States to watch, so he can bounce up and down in his high chair, clap his little hands, and cry "Yay! Make it go boom again!"

Remarkable story from Denmark's nat'l broadcaster. "When Danish soldiers were flown to Greenland in January...they brought explosives so they could destroy, among other things, the runways in Nuuk & Kangerlussuaq [to] prevent US mil aircraft from landing" www.dr.dk/nyheder/indl...
In his Telegraph column Nick Timothy is openly arguing that his worries about the Trafalgar Sq event are explicitly about Islam, not public expressions of faith in general. This is not what his Tory colleagues have argued, but they have also not contradicted him, so this is presumnably party policy.
🚨🚨 Spot on by @anneapplebaum.bsky.social on allies "abandoning" #Trump: "This isn’t cowardice. It’s a calculation. Most of them have stopped trying to find the hidden logic behind Trump’s actions, and they understand that any contribution they make will count for nothing".
a) the vast majority of those colonisers came over in the early 1600s, not the past couple of decades.
b) most of those "English" colonisers are of Scottish descent, as more Scots than English settled in NI, and it was at the direction of James VI, a Scottish king who only later ruled England.
Journalists praising Trump for his ‘accessibility’ when he only uses that accessibility to insult and outright lie to them will never not be weird to me.
For God's sakes, this coverage!
You know her name, she's the leader of the opposition!

18 yr old Bahar had offers from York and Reading, but 'thanks to Shabana Mahmood, she will now never escape the Taliban.'
'Britain has decided that the girl who fought the Taliban’s agenda, who learned English in secret, who turned down a forced marriage, who won her place, is an asylum risk.'
Trump did not announce a U.S. policy then walk it back. That is not what happened, and media presenting it that way does a disservice.
Trump said words he thought might appeal to his audience in the moment, with no connection to actual policy, then did that again with a different question/asker.
