The six-pound, five zillion-page Documentary Now coffee table book is being published May 19. I wrote the introduction! You can pre-order it (signed by yours truly) at this link: mzs.press/PRE-ORDER-SI...

Mentioning this again, because I just interviewed yet another older creator who mentioned how hard it is to create when fans stop responding, and how life-affirming it is when it suddenly comes back.
Rod Serling stands in a glowing doorway, surrounded by the title Serling: A Journey Into The Twilight Zone with TV's First Visionary, by Alan Sepinwall
Very excited to reveal the cover for my next book, Serling: A Journey Into The Twilight Zone with TV’s First Visionary. The book will be published by Grand Central on October 13 of this year, and pre-orders are open now: www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/alan-...
I'm not a woman, I'm not a man
I am something that you'll never understand
I'll never beat you, I'll never lie
And if you're evil, I'll forgive you by and by
BREAKING: The U.S. bishops’ Committee on Doctrine just issued a formal statement defending Pope Leo XIV's teaching authority on just war doctrine — less than twelve hours after JD Vance told a Turning Point USA crowd the pope should “be careful” talking theology.
This is a serious escalation.
"Harry, I’m going to let you in on a little secret. Everyday, once a day, give yourself a present. Don’t plan it, don’t wait for it. Just let it happen."

Loved this season of “Shrinking.” And Harrison fucking Ford, man. Just give him an Emmy already!
Today, my fellow founding worker-owners and I are launching a subscription drive to @feedravenous.bsky.social. We are a group of experienced and award-winning food journalists here to publish thoughtful writing and incisive reporting from around the food world.

This is going to seem like a tangent, but I’ve been thinking lately about Rectify, an all-time great show that seems mostly forgotten now. Part of its beauty was that it asked you to confront feeling a way about a person or situation while knowing you will *never* know the full truth of it.

Sad news. Mary Beth Hurt was such an interesting, spiky actress--it was always a pleasurable jolt when she showed up on screen. I would recommend Interiors, Chilly Scenes of Winter, or The World According to Garp as starting points. variety.com/2026/film/ne...
Your favorite still gets to be your favorite.
Each of us gives out our own trophies.
A personal note: I was very touched to hear Best Editing winner Andy Jurgensen thank his aunt Barbara Hall. As an Academy archivist, she took an interest in my research and, miraculously, found me George Stevens's pocket diary. A miracle. Five Came Back would not have been what it was without her.
The Academy votership is so, so full of people who feel that if everything came together, just once, even for the most unlikely movie, it could happen.
Amy Madigan. Brava!
Why not nominate if you can? Lots of writers, editors and artists would be happy to be a Hugo finalist this year!
(Including, uhhhhh, me)

What a gorgeous cover!
Inside: A heavily researched, guided tour of Batman: The Animated Series, with plenty of behind-the-scenes revelations.
Hello, I reviewed ROOSTER for @ebertvoices.bsky.social as part of women writers week, an opportunity that enabled me to ask the question: Did Steve Carell really have to fall on that young woman's boobs?

A black and white photo of her.
Four covers colored by Wood, including Batman vs the Incredible Hulk, Superman vs Wonder Woman, Adventure Comics featuring the Spectre, and Detective Comics featuring Batman and Manhunter.
Tatjana Wood was a very prolific colorist, who contributed to several of DC Comics' best runs of all time, & colored an amazing amount of their covers from the 1970s to 1990s. She was also an artist who assisted Wally Wood during their marriage.

THREAD: I got laid off from NYMag/Vulture after 14 years. The family lost 75% of income + medical. Now mzs.press bookstore, once a side project. is do-or-die for Judith & I. I feel weird telling you this because others are doing much worse. But if you could like or share this, we'd be so grateful!
In comic book stores now: a weird tale of far-future doggy endangerment entitled “Puppy Lake,” about what happens when you don’t teach man, beast, or machine what it means to love or be loved. Or swim. From me, Lukas Ketner, Michelle Madsen. Enjoy!
Would buy
because I keep forgetting to mention it: LITERALLY ANYONE can nominate books for this prize! yes! that means you! you have until march 31st!
I offer a spirited salute to critic Christy Lemire, who is leaving rogerebert.com after a 13 year run in which she wrote about every conceivable type of movie. A total pro. Here's a collection of excerpts of work, with a note from publisher Chaz Ebert: www.rogerebert.com/features/chr...
What incredible work, and what an amazing life. When I was a wee lad, the original run of this title shaped my perception of monster stories. There was an exuberant, poetic quality to the way it looked, and the coloring was a huge part of that.
Coming soon to a comic book shop near you: “Puppy Lake.”
Happy Birthday!
It's only February, but this has gotta be the most unusual, least expected coffee table book of the year: 600 pages and 7 pounds on Documentary Now! I wrote the introduction, I'm proud to say. You can pre-order it signed (by me!) at the link. Publication date is May 2026. mzs.press/PRE-ORDER-SI...
Needless to say, Robert Duvall was iconic to me and it was a cherished honor that I got to speak to him for this interview. www.nytimes.com/2014/10/05/m...
