Sanctions, by Souled American 12 track album

Join me in getting excited for the first new Souled American @souledamerican.bsky.social album in 30 years. The return of their skeletal, darkly minimalist country sound after this long is very welcome: souledamerican.bandcamp.com/album/sancti...

She’s never made a bad comic. When I read The Basilisk recently I had to instantly go back and read it again right away because it was so good and so mysteriously affecting. Not something I feel compelled to do very often.

I really love that pre-Crisis Moench Batman run, it was like the last gasp of the old DC, nobody cared or was paying attention upstairs, and it just had this really weird, moody tone, full of gothy romance and apocalyptic vibes.

Writing On Games, Dunkey, Iron Pineapple, Saint Riot. I like a good mix of positive vibes and humor with smart, opinionated takes.

kevin drumm | select recordings, 2011 – present Calling Kevin Drumm "prolific" feels insufficient to sum up the sheer volume of material he's released over the years, mostly self-published, often at a clip of a dozen or more recordings every year. Drumm has always been an iconoclast, rarely content to sit in one place musically for long, and since 2011 that restless spirit has been embodied in his release methodologies as well.

A summary of essential recordings from Kevin Drumm's later "Bandcamp" era, a handful of favorites selected from the noise/drone master's endless flow of exciting music.

Actually making the joke would be violating the spirit of the score. The comedian should walk up to the mic and then just stand there.

20 favorites from 2024 Here are 20 favorites (plus bonus picks) that I really loved from this year. My attention to music is admittedly pretty scattered and not especially deep in any one area these days, but these are s…

Now that 2024 is officially over, here's my top 20 in music for the year, first year in a while I've paid enough attention to do such a big list: reddybrownobjects.wordpress.com/2025/01/01/1...

áine o’dwyer | turning in space (2023) The London-based, Irish-born sound artist Áine O'Dwyer is very sensitive to the notion of place. Her music is always consciously embedded in its setting, in conversation with the environment around her. She has consistently explored interactions between sounds she produces, the contours of a particular location, and the external sounds that can be found there. Her two volumes of Music For Church Cleaners…

A review of the subtle interactions of piano and location sounds on Áine O'Dwyer's fascinating triple cassette Turning In Space.

Very happy to share the return of the great avant music journal surround and my piece about the sound design and music of Twin Peaks.

Nobody who’s worked in tech support would be surprised by this. I once had a call for “printer problems” that they couldn’t explain further over the phone. Turned out the problem was they had no printer at all.

Sarah Hennies: Motor Tapes, by Sarah Hennies 3 track album

It's Bandcamp Friday and as a first listen to a new purchase, I'm really enjoying this Sarah Hennies double disc set this morning. Incredibly dynamic and beautiful compositions, covering a very wide range across an hour and a half. newworldrecords.bandcamp.com/album/sarah-...

Everyone is doing Spotify Wrapped, but I’d love to see more alternative summaries. I don’t stream, I try to buy direct from artists and labels, and track listening through lastfm. Below is my top 10 most played artists for 2024 to date.

carme lópez | quintela (2024) The bagpipes have been especially constrained by culture and history, limiting the applications of this unique instrument to a pretty narrow range. Though important historically as a traditional and ceremonial instrument throughout much of western Europe, bagpipes have rarely seen much use outside of those contexts. Today, most people are familiar only with the shrill, martial sounds of modern Scottish Highland bagpipes as used in military rituals, or played at the funerals of police and soldiers.

Carme López brings extended techniques to a surprisingly warm, emotional, boldly experimental album of bagpipe drone music.

Since “Wah Gwan Delilah” exists, going “back to back” with lawsuits like this is still somehow only the second most embarrassing thing Drake has ever done.

It's on my short list as well. Really unique combination of sounds and ideas.

Olivia Block's beautiful new album channels Krautrock and '70s prog but also feels like a clear development from her meticulous electroacoustic work.

"hongkong" (NORENT066), by yan jun 9 track album

I like that every Yan Jun project I hear sounds different. This one is abrasive, sputtering harsh noise made with feedback. Intense, but still feels more controlled than not. Good stuff. norentrecords.bandcamp.com/album/hongko...

There’s so much! I’ve been doing a sporadic deep dive for a while now and will eventually put together a best of Bandcamp roundup for him. It’s easy to miss some of his best work amidst the sheer volume.

aimless, painless, timeless, by Choi Joonyong/Hong Chulki/Kawaguchi Takahiro 10 track album

Quite enjoyed my first listen today to this new album from the newly returned South Korean label Balloon & Needle, great textured live improv work from all 3 musicians. bnn31.bandcamp.com/album/aimles...

No idea what this could sound like based on the extreme range these 2 musicians have, which makes this a very exciting announcement!

Choi Joonyong and Devin DiSanto confound narrative expectations while noisily dismantling a piano.

Like so many other things in this world, absolutely disgraceful. A system wholly designed to extract mass amounts of money while treating the actual art, and the people who make it, as fully disposable. Buy music on Bandcamp and other digital sellers!
