They met a fellow last night who was the right hand man of a local lord. Literally everyone has good things to say about the guy. Previously trusted NPCs have only said good things about this guy and his guy. Every sense motive check is clean.

If you have an NPC betray the players, especially if you do this very early in the campaign, they will never ever trust any NPC ever again. Like ever again.
