Remember when you could find an orchid that wasn't a Phalaenopsis? They're nice and all, but I miss the part of the orchid craze when other species were more commonly available. I had a Dendrobium of some sort like 30 years ago and it was lovely. I'm taking recommendations for where I should shop.

Bringing Fire’s GM Academy attempts to create a  “Community of Practice” through which novices can systematically learn through trial and error, and share their wisdom with other GMs. Our Head of Education described this quite eloquently here... give it a read!

Becoming a GM involves a particular kind of learning called “social learning” – basically, learning to do what you see other people doing.

I haven’t signed up for anything because I registered as a helper (I’m just on this one panel about teaching GMing); I’m going in blind and plan to sign up for stuff now. Open to suggestions!

Oh just myself, I'll be giving feedback, not testing stuff I've written.

Slightly different, but: I'm building software to support gamemasters, and I've wondered how I should handle interacting with other people who are working on their own similar projects. I decided to engage, and I don't feel like there's a risk of our projects losing their distinct vibes.

An embarrassment of riches.

I'm stoked for it! Besides some play testing, I'll be on a panel talking about teaching GMing.

Of course, this is just an overview of a fundamental cycle we could spend much more time discussing. If you want to learn more, check out the blog below!

Judge -  Judgment is not just about interpreting the outcome of a die roll or other game-mechanical procedure, but also about making the decision as to what procedure to employ at all. These are broken down into the categories of karma, drama, or fortune.

Listen - We aim to teach GM's to listen not to confirm what you already know but to reshape your own understanding and generate surprise and novelty. It takes practice, but is rewarding. Try recording a session you run listening back on input from others you might have accidentally overlooked

Describe - You need to get people on the same page in terms of what they are imagining together, to establish a shared sense of situation so that actions/intentions make sense in the context of the game. Using all the senses, and sharing NPC's perspective is key here.

One of the first lessons we teach in our GM101 sessions is the “Describe, Listen, Judge” cycle. DLJ is a comprehensive framework for understanding what a GM does, and a tool that helps diagnose and correct hiccups and miscommunication at the level of play. Let's break them down🧵

The indie TTRPG creator directory now has 197 profiles on it, which is just incredible.

But it'd be a shame for it to stop there!

Any chance of a signal boost folks? @ttrpgcommunity.bsky.social

TTRPGTech Spotlight:

I’ve been playing with my Pixels (gamewithpixels.com) devkit and it is oh-so incredible!

Pixels smart dice know what number they rolled, use bluetooth to share it to apps, have programmable lighting… and they look badass! Can’t wait for these to come to market.

Nice to meet you! I'm feeling my way around the new space as well... I run a TTRPG tech startup that's building a campaign manager for GMs and we also ran some really great workshops for aspiring GMs at GenCon.

7. There are 3 major gaps in the existing landscape. There is no central point capable of working with all the aspects of a campaign, there is a scattered and isolated landscape of tools that do not play well together, and the tools that exist are cumbersome and restrictive.

6. Prep wins! Some GMs spend half an hour prepping for a 4-hour session; others spend four... or more! Regardless, most GMs orient their routine around prepping an upcoming session; they create fiction and produce campaign ambiance to fill the needs of that preparation.

5. GMs manage campaigns using 3 modes: author, prep, and run. No matter their individual process, everything a GM does falls into one of three core focuses. Running is largely isolated from the other two, but most GMs do authoring and prepping together, flowing back and forth.
