Hanna's topic: What happens in the brain, behaviour and body when we don't get enough sleep? Using zebrafish larvae, her team wants to show how sleep deprivation throws biological processes out of balance.
We are very excited: @hannazwaka.bsky.social has been awarded a Leibniz Best Minds grant as a Junior Research Group Leader! Five years of independent research, tenure track and part of the Best Minds network – a real boost for her career.
New study findings: Breaks make us better in the short term – but they do not automatically lead to learning.
The brain primarily uses breaks for rest and planning.
Learning happens during active practice.

Why do we sometimes fail at simple tasks? Our colleague @hannazwaka.bsky.social from #teamLIN co-authored a new study with Prof. Florian Engert’s lab @harvardmcb.bsky.social showing it’s due to lapses in focus—not ability. Using larval zebrafish, they revealed “attentional switching,” explaining
intense and full of little adrenaline rushes.
