Come work at the Bristol Baby Lab! Postdoc recruitment starting soon; read up and get in touch with relevant people now. (I’m not involved in recruitment, but always happy to informally chat about what the Bristol developmental psychology scene is like.)

Couldn’t agree more! Asking “how does it sound?” is perhaps the least interesting question with regards to language.

I was actually joking to someone at a workshop recently about whale farts - if these impressive “vowel sounds” were produced from an animal’s butt would that still be “language”? Pressure moving through pipes - any sort of pipe, living or not - can make an impressive range of noises…

How and why does cognition vary so greatly between individuals and species? In @natrevbiodiv.nature.com, we propose the "Predatory Intelligence Hypothesis" which posits that the cognitive challenges associated with predator–prey interactions drive a cognitive co-evolutionary arms race

I don’t work with wildlife in situ much these days - I’ve been focussed on ex situ populations for many years. But today, I did reflect on a some human-baboon conflict work in Cape Town I was involved in, and how we haven’t seemed to get past the issue of how animals cope with our rubbish!

Just gave a lecture on how animals behaviouraly adapt (or not!) to human-induced rapid enviro. change. I really depressed myself & the class! Yes, cockatoos have learned to open bins and raccoons can thrive in cities, but urban adaptors are rare and animals shouldn’t need to adapt to our garbage.
