23. Being jealous of someone else’s success isn’t necessarily bad. It is a fire. You can let it get out of control and consume you can learn to control it and use it as motivation to improve

22. When growing a YT channel, as in life, try not to ride the highs too high or the lows too low. These platforms are volatile with lots of factors affecting viewer behavior.

Your job is to keep posting, improving and repeating.

21. You do not need to stay active on other platforms to grow on YT. It’s actually been the reverse - YT will be the catalyst to feed traffic to other platforms. If you want to grow a stream on Twitch…start by building a YT channel of prerecorded content.

Then people will find you when you’re live.

20. Focus on small deliverable bits of content to begin to grow. Whether it’s one video per month…or one short per week. Don’t sit waiting for the perfect idea or video before posting. Creativity is a process that requires output as a part of it.

19. Schedule your content in advance. Unless you’re making videos about current events, you should schedule your content to release at regular intervals. This goes a long way into building an “audience rhythm” with your viewers

Thank you! I appreciate it

18. Use your video as a means of soliciting subscribers. Asking people to sub to your channel without any content on there is completely backwards. It leads to terrible engagement from subscribers which hurts the channel in the long run

17. There is “taking a break” and there is “choosing to prioritize other things”. Know the difference if you want to grow a YouTube channel.

I find you tend to need less of the first if you regularly do more of the second.

16. You cannot fake it. If you’re going to grow a YouTube channel, you have to believe in what you are creating 100%. People will see through anything that is fake. And you won’t be able to consistently make things you don’t believe in.

15. YouTube has a wide variety of formats that it supports; Livestreams, videos, shorts, podcasts. Use the format that best fits your style. But if you’re looking to get monetized, I’d highly recommend focusing on videos, streams and podcasts. The monetization requirements are easier to hit

14. You have to create buy in for your audience. Why should they keep watching you? What makes your video different than everyone else? If you’re not sure, start watching channels of creators with similar concepts and observe what they do well and what they lack.

Crazy. Very grateful for everyone who’s hit that button and joined us on the journey. Many more NES, SNES and Genesis games to clear, but I look forward to doing it with all of you. 🍻

13. The first 15-30 seconds of your video is crucial. You’ve gotta hook someone who took the risk to click on your video. Don’t waste time. Get right to why the video is going to meet their need.

That first impression is everything.

12. YouTube analytics should be used to hone and refine what you’re making to make it better, not to evaluate your worth.

Numbers fluctuate. It’s up to you to use them in a productive way. Otherwise you’ll rise and fall hourly with how well or poorly a particular video is doing

11. Make sure, if you are on camera, that you are well lit. Such a basic thing, but vitally important. You will increase your engagement metrics when you can be seen clearly.

Remove the barriers for your audience.

10. Comments aren’t personal. You have to learn to handle negative comments if you want to succeed.

Your replies should be more about modeling the behavior that you’d want to see than appealing to your baser instincts.

Don’t give trolls oxygen

9. Thumbnails gotta be eye catching, but that doesn’t mean it has to be overly busy. Simple is your friend here.

Also, become comfortable incorporating words in your thumbnail. Play with fonts, sizes, and colors to get the best pop you can.

Lastly, stick to 3-4 words on a thumb max. Keep it simple

8. The first videos you post are probably going to suck. Go in with that expectation. However, it will give you some data to start to analyze, and this is where you can really make strides if you interpret your data properly.

That data should inform your decisions for future vids.

7. Youtube REWARDS consistency. It’s better to reliably post one video per month than to post a bunch one month and go silent the next. This helps YT find your audience faster and that audience will appreciate content that’s reliable.

Focus on repeatable, sustainable, and reliable.

6. Use specific keywords in your video title and description that help YouTube understand what the video is about. That’s the best way to unlock the power of the algorithm to find the best audience for your content. It’s one of the smartest returns on investment of your time as a smaller channel.

5. Stop networking. Entirely. That’s not how you grow a YouTube channel. It’s grown by making content, posting it, and letting the algorithm find your audience for you.

Again, everything you spend time and money on should be in service of the vision of the channel. Be disciplined in that.

4. Be cheap. If you’re starting out, you’re just trying to prove the concept of your channel. Don’t make a huge investment in equipment, just what is needed to deliver your content. All the bells and whistles can wait.

Take Lone Starr’s advice from Spaceballs: “Bring only what you need to survive!”

3. Going viral isn’t the goal. That’s a byproduct of putting out content, reviewing it, refining it, and repeating it.

Focus your efforts on producing something of quality that is sustainable, not trying to catch the algorithm just right.

Consistency in your content is what produces growth.

2. You must prioritize properly to grow a channel. A livestream subscriber alert doesn’t matter all that much compared to making the audio in your video well balanced.

Spend your time on the important, not so flashy things that will set you up for long term success.

Crazy. Feel like we’re just getting started.

1. Start with a vision. You must have a vision of what you want your YouTube channel to be. If it is aimless, it won’t grow sustainably

Then ask yourself “What is the appeal of this vision to a new viewer?”

Answer that question and write it down. Content you make should aim to fulfill that answer
