The bronze state of Truman in front of the library

The bronze state of Truman in front of the library

I have to fill about three hours in Kansas City this morning. I was going to tour the Federal Reserve but it's sealed off for some event today. So instead I'm at the Harry S Truman Presidential Library...

I saw that and went, "Well, now I'm definitely not going to bother with Doomsday."

Not that I believe that it's actually crucial for even a second, but to say that it is tells me that no lessons have been learned and I can just ignore the movie and go on with my life.

I've seen bits and pieces of the word processor kit for the Saturn for sale a few times but the prices are always crazy high for something that's essentially a novelty.

I'll pay $10 for a useless Famicom modem. I'm not paying $400 for a useless Saturn floppy drive.

The Saturn did have a word processor, printer, and floppy drive...

Attempts to merge computers and consoles is fascinating and one of those things that gets overlooked a lot and treated as a weird one-off even though everyone was doing it right down to Apple. Of course, the real material difference between them has usually been one of tax and tariff definitions.

Titan has a neat concept: block breaking but you're in a maze that you can freely move through. All of its implementation, on the other hand, works very hard at draining any fun out of it.

It's the most narrowly targeted marketing ever.

I'm just going to say that
Big Ichigeki! Pachislot Daikouryaku (or Big Climax! Pachislot Huge Conquest) might be the least subtle game series ever created.

A weird set of circumstances lead to Namco releasing Obocchama-kun on the PC Engine, a licensed game that was actually by Pack-In-Videos based on a cartoon about a billionaire kid that had the PTA up in arms.

It has occurred to me that the real-world abrupt transition to pachi-slots is probably what killed the Pachio-kun series. The final original Pachio-kun game was in 1995, right when everyone was throwing out their pachinko machines.

So what I'm saying is one good thing came out of Otaku no Seiza.

She doesn't sound human, at least. But it is surprisingly loud for a small cat.

I could hear her snoring from three rooms away.

I did a quick check for the datasheet and couldn't find it immediately. Usually that kind of increment is the quantity of internal memory or cache. Micros like that have dozens of variations and it's standard to identify a low end spec and then permit the use of any with a matching pin out above it.

I wouldn't even say "current". People falling on their face by trying to make a new multiplayer only game had been a consistent story for forty years at this point. It's requires a perfect mix of innovation, marketing, and luck to get off the ground, and so many people can't read the market...

For Random Game Saturday, here is my limited collector's edition of Prey that I spent an entire $5 on. It came with the miniatures and a terrible art book (not picturered). Don't care for steel cases like this since they inevitably gey dinged up.

Weirdly, the cart recognizes the Japanese BIOS since it changes the title to Monster World II when I play it on my Japanese SMS. But the audio didn't work correctly on it so I had to switch to the US SMS for my b-roll...

Oh yeah, it wears all of its themes on its sleeve. I was just pointing out that it was also the end point of a throughline that Kurosawa had been working with that might go overlooked.

With that weird mix of channels, I have to wonder if they did some kind of survey for YouTube channels with strong viewer loyalty. And while they wanted the feedback on that, they also didn't know how to have the discussion outside of the context of a junket.

But, yeah, very weird invite...

Everyone knows that if a game is telling you to go in a certain direction, then they're hiding the good stuff in the opposite direction.

If you want to follow this post-war Kurosawa theme, the films to watch are One Wonderful Sunday (filmed on the streets of Tokyo in 1946, often without permission), Drunken Angel, The Quiet Duel, Stray Dog, Scandal, and Ikiru. Most of those aren't his famous movies, but they capture the era well.

The final film of the occupation era for Kurosawa was Ikiru in which the protagonist spends the last days of his life turning that swamp into a park.

It's one of those things that's obvious when you watch all of Kurosawa films in chronological order, and incredible and subtle storytelling.
