Also, and this is important too, you can do incredible harm to the artists creating said work when you approach it like that.

When you approach something you need to ask yourself if you're here to actually engage with it or not. At least if you mean to actually support the artists. 'Tis all. 4/fin

To come back to this a second, I think there's a lot of misunderstandings in how art is interpreted.

It's not JUST the artist, or society, it's internal. An interpretation is YOUR viewpoint of a piece of art... and you're not a blank slate.

I got stuck on transliterating something so now I have to call my grandmother and my mother, who don't speak the same languages, to get answers.

Being in a multi-ethnic household can be such a treat but also a mite confusing.

Calling a character a bitch enough (especially a character of a colour different than you) won’t change the actual content… but it will change your perception. To the point that you won’t be swayed otherwise, won’t accept the nuance on screen.

The bias in perceptions don’t just come from out there.

Sometimes when we’re seeing a portrayal of a character… we gotta trust the process.

When we let our internal biases play ball, we let them override what we’re actually seeing. It’s like that old adage: say something enough and it will come true. 1/

Some of you are WAY too comfortable calling women in media "a terrible bitch" on posts that are LITERALLY about that morally-nuanced woman. Your resistance to thinking outside of a white supremacist and individualistic mindset is killing your ability to see complex characters and it shows!
