It sure feels like the LCME is reacting to this announcement to allow their med schools to not have to weigh risking their federal funding vs. staying accredited. How is this even the choice we in #MedEd are facing?
Where did this LCME backpedaling come from? It was announced almost immediately after the Justice Department publicized inquiries into 3 med schools' admissions practices. www.nytimes.com/2026/03/26/u...
"Medical schools should teach future physicians how to care for the whole patient, not just the symptoms they see in the exam room. That means helping students understand the social and structural barriers their patients face in their daily lives and lived experiences." @ucheblackstockmd.bsky.social
#MedEd must continue to teach students about structural barriers to care: "His repeated ER visits weren’t about individual failure; they reflected structural barriers...that shaped his health long before he arrived at the hospital." www.statnews.com/2026/04/15/l... by @ucheblackstockmd.bsky.social

Thank you for reading!
Where biology ends and bias begins. Lessons on Belonging from our DNA. Shoumita Dasgupta.
I received a new book today, "Where biology ends and bias begins," by
@profdasgupta.bsky.social .
It looks great!
And what an inspiring dedication page.

“In this administration, politics have overtaken evidence as the currency of scientific merit, as funding is diverted from important research studies and promising young investigators to advance a political agenda of censorship.“ open.substack.com/pub/sciencea...
It's impossible to overstate the deep admiration I have for Brian as a scientist, as an educator, and as a human. I am grateful others will get to know him through this portrait.
And to learn more about the work, it just so happens that @robbeewedow.bsky.social has a webinar sponsored by @geneticssociety.bsky.social tomorrow 4/8: Genetics Curriculum to Refute Genetic Essentialism www.ashg.org/product/gene...
For his complete Humane Genetics Curriculum, please go to the website of his collaborator Robbee Wedow @robbeewedow.bsky.social, generously provided entirely free for all to engage in this essential work. www.wedowlab.com/humane-genet...
And in Where Biology Ends and Bias Begins: Lessons on Belonging from Our DNA, Chapter 4, you'll see my homage to Brian's work, just trying to expand his message of scientifically informed equity.
"There are a lot of different ways that genetics has been used to justify prejudice and there are lots of ways that human-made social categories interface with biological categories." Yes! This is so much of the reason behind my book Where Biology Ends and Bias Begins www.ucpress.edu/books/where-...
A star scientist showed that better genetics lessons could reduce racism. It was the death knell for his career. Thank you, @mmolteni.bsky.social for sharing Brian's story. He is a generational talent, indeed, and has inspired my own educational activities deeply. www.statnews.com/2026/04/07/b...

Mentorship Matters: Harnessing Authentic Connection to Cultivate Tomorrow’s Leaders in Genomic Medicine

...While we're talking about mentoring, given the ongoing discourse about outsourcing education and mentoring to bots, it strikes me that my entire talk highlighted the human dimensions of mentoring, the essential nature of true human connection, and the importance of fostering a sense of belonging.
Throwback Thursday to 2 weeks ago at #ACMGMtg26 where I had the true privilege of giving one of the TEDTalks. Speaking about mentoring to an audience including mentees and mentors from over the years was an especially meaningful experience for me. So grateful for the opportunity!
Not only that, but the American Eugenics Records Office helped create template laws for states around the US and to explore to the world! www.ucpress.edu/books/where-...
🧪 Pathways for future scientists are becoming scarce, threatening a strong and innovative workforce: “We are not simply shrinking budgets. We are shrinking who gets to imagine themselves in science at all.” @jpflores.rbind.io hechingerreport.org/opinion-path...
It’s an important theme in my recent book, Where Biology Ends and Bias Begins, written to be accessible to scientists and non scientists alike.

I ♥️ librarians!
Back in Boston! And will share reflections after catching my breath! Great to see so many friends, old and new.
Focusing on the great connections at #ACMGMtg26 and hoping my second time boarding this flight gets us in the air tonight! ✈️ 🤞🏾 www.nytimes.com/2026/03/13/u...

“Scientists are often encouraged to avoid politics. But this advice is outdated, if it was ever correct in the first place. Science relies on public support.”
