This idea has been on a low simmer for several years, waiting for the right combination of people and partners to do it right. So excited to say that in June of this year...We're Doing The Wiz.

The most recent episode of Hyperfixed is a very special one. It's about a mother and a son, but also about dreams - the ones we might set aside as we get older. I cried. Alex cried. Everybody cried. Told only the way @agoldman.bsky.social can. Highly recommend a listen.

I am learning that quite a few reply all listeners aren’t aware of Hyperfixed, so if you have any friends in your life that liked reply all, if you could say “hey did you know Alex has a new show called Hyperfixed?” That might be very nice!

I’ve started a new series on Song Exploder where I talk to fascinating people about the music that transformed them: Key Change. My first guest is actor/musician Sophie Thatcher, on Elliott Smith's "Waltz #1.” You can find it in the Song Exploder feed or here: songexploder.net/keychange

It's the final days of the Radiotopia fundraiser so I'm bubbling up this thread where I break down how we operate the network.

We are trying to reach 2024 donors (we need about 900 more!) So, if you regularly listen to one of the pods, consider donating today!

Screenshot from article: "Jess Shane’s dizzying and dazzling deconstruction of the documentary industrial complex is essentially a documentary about the making of a documentary. Disenchanted with her field’s traditional ethical practices, which she thinks lean exploitative, Shane sets out to reinvent the form, inviting the show’s “main characters” to take a more collaborative (and officially compensated) role in the telling of their own stories. Even when things inevitably go awry, the inside look at how narrative sausage is made — relayed with Shane’s sharp and ultimately self-lacerating wit — is never less than captivating."

I feel complicated about year end lists, but proud that our complicated show— made by a small but mighty team @michellemacklem.bsky.social @y00ree.bsky.social @audroma.bsky.social & #SaraNics— made this list & are in such stellar company
TY @reggieugwu.bsky.social!

Yesterday was Giving Tuesday, today is No Ragrets Wednesday -- you can still support Radiotopia! Either way, Audrey's breakdown below is worth a read about how RT and all our shows make it work.

If you’ve already donated, THANK YOU, and if you have not yet, we’d all really appreciate your vote of confidence on.prx.org/494XLUq

This is a lot of information (hah) – but I spend most days trying to figure out how to improve all of this – so if you have ideas/questions/feedback, I really, REALLY want to hear from you!

So when you donate to Radiotopia, YES, you are directly supporting the shows you love, but you also support Radiotopia: an increasingly rare network model, dedicated to supporting independent creators.

This means every show in Radiotopia gets monthly payments from that base of support we’ve been growing since we started. This money is ESSENTIAL, especially for new shows who haven’t yet become monetizable through advertising.

Fundraising $$ is split shows: 80%, Radiotopia: 20% which goes towards operating costs. The shows’ rev is split into 2 pools. Pool 1 is divided evenly across all, and Pool 2 is based on downloads, calculated quarterly. This acknowledges production schedules/audience pull, etc.

…podcast publishing tech (a platform PRX
built called Dovetail), marketing + PR support, editorial feedback, biz strategy, fundraising support, and we help our shows navigate a wild and fast-changing industry. We do this in-kind.

We sell sponsorships via our sales partner Soundrise, with most of that revenue going to our shows. And we provide a bunch of other support too…

Our Network Dir. @y00ree.bsky.social and I make sure our shows hit their own goals, creatively and financially. There are 100 decisions a day and our jobs are to offer advice/feedback/communicate the realities of the podcast market – but our shows get to decide what to do with that information.

Radiotopia is a network owned by @prx, a non-profit public media company. I’m a PRX employee, and so are all of my coworkers who support the network. All the shows in Radiotopia are totally independent – they own their shows/businesses/IP and get to make all the decisions.

It's Giving Tuesday and I know you're getting a lot of asks, but I want to tell you more about why you should give to @radiotopia. A question I get asked a lot, even by people who are familiar with our model, is..."so how does Radiotopia actually work?" Let me break it down…🧵
