Moved from Auckland and into a cheaper / smaller house. And I love it. Close to my parents and food from their vege garden too. Downsizing my life has been great. And I realise how privileged I am that I could too.

I reduced my hours and job responsibilities to enjoy more life balance and slow living … I therefore spend a lot less on ‘discretionary’ stuff and a lot less on capitalist crap.
I am pretty keen on all things Degrowth, simple living and no doubt it’s all ‘bad’ for GDP.
Pretty great for my health.

My personal view: capital gains tax should be paid when property NOT the family home passes to the estate or inheritors. Person ‘sold’ it effectively on day of death. On the family home, NO CGT until after it is ‘sold’ to estate on day of death, but yes to CGT from that day.

If property passes to an estate, it’s tax free at that point. If the estate sells it later and makes a capital gain, that period is taxed only - from date of transfer to the estate.
