Announcement: I will start as an assistant professor of ecohydrology at the University of Oulu starting from January. Snow, microclimate and Arctic-alpine ecosystems still on focus. Stay tuned for soon-to-be-opened Postdoc and PhD positions! Thank you for your attention to this matter!

New preprint! How do leaf functional traits vary within a growing season? πΏπβοΈ We sampled 6 traits of 11 species over 15 weeks, and found that traits vary greatly, and every growth form followed their own pattern π¦ Species rank remained somewhat same! @niittynen.bsky.social doi.org/10.22541/au....
New article! To what extent community-level knowledge on species abundances helps in predicting species traits? πΏβοΈπ We used joint species-trait distribution modeling to link species abundances to trait variation. By Nerea Abrego, @niittynen.bsky.social, me & Otso Ovaskainen doi.org/10.1002/ecy....
Thank you to everyone who presented in our #microclimate change session today @imc2025.bsky.social! @jlembrechts.bsky.social, @niittynen.bsky.social & I were very happy with the contributions & discussions. Great to see microclimate getting more attention in high-elevation ecosystems ππ‘βοΈπ§
So to clarify, with the method am I able to say something like "in this plot most of the carbon is stored within the last 1-10 years, whereas in this plot most of the carbon is decades old"? Or are the uncertainties too big for this kind time-scale? Thanks for helping!
Great thanks! Sorry, "field-based" was misleading, I mean mainly "non-experimental". Okay, so well-mixed soils are hard.. But you can estimate the "average" age with the isotopes? What is the ball park of temporal resolution with those that you can achieve?
Me! Want to get in π
Applied with soils where material keeps mixing, so no clear profiles that could help. I have tried to read the literature but not sure I have gained a lot so far?
Please, help me to link with the people who know these stuff π (2/2)
Hey, fellow ecologists but especially #soil scientists! A complete novice asking: is there a field-based method to measure the approximate age profile of soil organic #carbon E.g., estimate how much is input from very recent years vs. decades vs. hundreds years ago? (1/2)
Cheers! (4/4)
As snow βοΈ patterns shift, the ripple effects on plants, animals, and microbes are profound. My work explores these changes to understand the future of these ecosystems. Follow for insights on how snow holds the key to Arctic life! β #ArcticScience #ClimateChange #Biodiversity (3/x)
Iβm a scientist in Finland, studying how arctic-alpine ecosystems function and adapt to climate change. These systems are (fascinatingly!) both fragile and resilient, much relying on snowβnot just as winterβs cover, but as a life-shaping force that creates and shelters the unique biodiversity (2/x)
I started this account a year ago, but now itβs time for an #introduction! (1/X)
Here, in @bsky.app, I'm primarily planning to connect with my fellow scientists and naturally with people otherwise interested in the same topics: mainly #Snow #mountains #biodiversity #microclimate and #plants
