I also just started teaching in game design and am really impressed by how my students have adapted the lessons into their work. When it clicked for them, it really clicked!

Concept art for the Jodorowsky / Moebius Dune film collaboration
Ralph McQuarrie concept art for Star Wars
If we'd gotten this version of Alien, plus the Jodorowsky/Moebius Dune and that McQuarrie concept for Star Wars, the entire history of sci-fi film might have been more wondrous!

The Matrix Online changed my life. After seeing the power of storytelling to get hundreds of people to work together to solve artificial problems in a virtual city, I realized games could inspire people to solve real problems in the real world too.
That's why I founded Nonadecimal Creative.

A photo of Eric Ford in a room full of plants overlaid with the caption "Live Events, The Matrix Online".
I don't reveal my true face often but @futuregamesshow.bsky.social made a documentary about the end of The Matrix Online MMO and I was lucky to share some stories about the incredible opportunity to design live events and ARGS while improv acting within The Matrix.

Things really clicked with my students this semester too. In week 1 they approached the assignments as busywork to be circumvented but in week 3 they see the progression and seem to understand how the assignment is cultivating the skills.
Course design success gives me the same joy as game design.

I grew up near there and it's one of my favorite places to visit. Traveling through Death Valley is like visiting a different planet every 15 minutes.

Some stories and screenshots from my 4-year ongoing arc about broken programs grappling with why they were created with human bodies and personalities; meanwhile the real humans grapple with sacrificing their humanity in order to survive the machines.

Eliminating repetitive busywork is its only ostensible value and it never seems capable of it.
The only thing it ever actually seems to do is replace people's brainstorming/design phase and that's the most fun and most important part for me to do and understand myself.

The times I tried to get VS copilot to do complex regex for me, it did okay at the top of the file but started changing the pattern before the end of the file.

A large, menacing spider with mantis claws standing protectively in front of a cluster of 3 oily orange eggs. The dark silhouettes of spiders are visible inside the eggs.
In case you're still looking for eggs today, the Mother of Spiders can lay hundreds of them. Newly remodeled with extra squishy, wet spider eggs.

My brief time as uber driver taught me the value of friendly conversations with strangers.
On a recent hike I met a Japanese tourist going up the mountain and learned about his research in kabuki theater. On the way down, met a guy training for firefighting and offered him part-time teaching work.

If I have time and it's still performant, I'd love to make its little legs twitch in there. I added an oil slick shader to the outer shell so it also looks very WET.

Unfortunately I don't think we have the funds to get voice acting for the entire game but I'm glad you confirmed the problems I felt about the old eggs. The best scenario would be that it visually looks like an egg and I don't even have to tell the player anything.

A neon blue spiky boulder that is completely opaque with visible tris. Doesn't give egg.
This was what the old egg looked like that required lots of "huh, more eggs here" prompting. I think the new model at least lets me remove a lot of that text.

A spherical ellipse with a gooey orange filling and a shimmering white translucent shell. The dark silhouette of a spider is visible inside. A wavy oil slick cascades down the outside of the shell.
Top view of the egg with a spider silhouette and legs visible below and a red-orange yolk.
Replacing the visuals for Black Ice's spider eggs. The old ones required a lot of narrative nudges saying "whoa, is that an egg??" because it didn't have many egg-like qualities.
Does the new design telegraph that it will hatch a spider if you bump into it or let it hatch?
