Last year, my first year in KL, I didn’t create a series. I was badly missing the tulip garden I had planted and cared for in Reno. Those tulips were such a joy and delight. I watched and loved them deeply each year. I still miss that patch of love but there is also much flower love to be had here 💕

I have been doing an annual photographic series of flowers in my yard since 2019 (I think). Flowers aren’t yet blooming in Kenny Lake so this year I’m working with the discarded cut flowers that Mike has given, flowers that have been sitting outside in snow and subzero temps for months 💕

The swans did a honking flyby this morning. The water in our pond complex is still solid so they didn’t land, but they’re here! 💕

Hopefully there will be other trips. GBNP is lovely and so is the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge (and the Black Rock Desert, and the Toiyabes, and, and, and). I’m ambivalent about Sierra v Sierras. I mean, we say Cascades & Rockies, but others have strong feelings about that particular s :)

Now it’s raining and snowing. But the sun seems like it really want a to break through the clouds so I’m holding out hope. Rain. And snow. Together. Ugh 💕

It’s snowing. I’m going to try to ignore it the best I can and focus on coffee and singing silly morning songs to my no-longer-seedling tomato plants 💕

My wish is for all of us to keep ourselves weird (Alaskans especially though) 💕

A few tomato sprouts poked up today! Yay for plant life (and a second day of high temps above freezing) 💕

My little sprouting pepper is giving out free love 💚

This year is the first time I’m growing from seed, and I am incredibly excited to see sprouts sprouting. I bought my seeds from Foundroot in Haines, and fingers are crossed for full-fledged peppers in a few months. It all starts with love 💚

Right now, what bops around my brain a lot is, What is this cold winter going to mean for mosquitoes? More? Fewer? Average? Are mosquitoes forecastable? I need to add bug spray to our list for the next town trip so I’m not caught short, however many there are (or aren’t) 💕

I hate selling on Marketplace but Alaska’s List is so scammy and Craigslist isn’t the greatest for our area. Sometimes I think it’s no wonder some folk have great piles of stuff in their yards/garages/sheds/etc 💕

The link doesn’t pop up with the image, but it’s a b&w 6x10 of the HCMS Skeena in the Portland Canal in the area between Hyder and Stewart.

Pardon Our Interruption...

HA Ives was a photographer who lived in Hyder in the early-mid 20th century, photographing the area around Hyder and Stewart. I collect his work; however, I am not wanting this particular image but it would be a super score for the right person IMHO 💕

I just watched the washers be reset to $4 per load (up from $3.75) and dryers are going up to $3 for 45 minutes. I suppose I’m lucky to have laundry facilities available, but I feel squeezed. Although…Anchorage hotel price is also $3 to dry, so maybe I shouldn’t feel that way ($2 to wash) 💕

The local laundromat is down 2 dryers, so there are now 10 washers for 6 dryers. I miss having a washing machine at home and just being able to hang dry stuff.

A letterpress sign stating, Do not harass the muskrats.

Morning printing project, another addition to my ‘signs’ series. Printed on Yupo, so they could go outside. Luckily, the folk who come over aren’t the muskrat-harassing type 💕

Snow totals going back to 2001-2002 for the Stewart, BC area.

Snow totals going back to 2001-2002 for the Stewart, BC area.

This also came across my FB feed—snow totals going back to 2001-2002 for Stewart, BC (which would give a rough estimate for what Hyder, AK received). Sometimes they get a lot of snow for being at sea level 💕

15.7 feet of snow so far this season for Stewart, BC. Presumably Hyder is right around the same. Not record-breaking, but still a fair amount to shovel.

We’re sitting at -21F and I’m very much ready for a non-winter color palette. I can’t wait for the swans to return and the muskrats to come out and to feel the sun warm my skin. Until then, I’ll just continue to enjoy the stillness and quiet and be thankful for the growing daylight hours 💕

For so many reasons, this is an absolute truth.

Me, trying to sell our 1991 snowmachine through letterpress. 🙃 Flyers go up in Glennallen tomorrow and maybe at Wenger’s and the Merc on Friday. 💕

As a kid, watching Reuben B Eaton on RATNET was the closest thing we had to getting a little bit of info to guess what weather might be coming our way. Hyder is one of those places that’s unique for many reasons 💕

It’s amazing how much more tolerable -20/-30/-40F is when there’s ample daylight. The higher solar angle is making a huge difference on my happiness scale 💕

This time last week I was spending extended one-on-one time with a hotel room toilet prepping for my first ever colonoscopy. I know more people my age (early 50s) who have had colon cancer than any other type. It was 100% worth doing it. Plus, I got a print out with photos when it was all done 💕

Growing up, using Alaska time was something only the post office did and Hyder mostly followed Pacific Time. I wonder with BC’s change to permanent standard time how the Hyderite’s perception and usage of time will change.

I also warn others about making sure outdoor grills aren’t walled in by snow because that can also be a killer and one some don’t think about because it’s outside. It’s good to think about these things because it could be life-saving. 💕

Thank you for the warning (I am 100% thankful for that). We’re very aware. Batteries are fresh in the CO detector and a window is cracked.
