Here’s a question Cop28 won’t address: why are billionaires blocking action to save the planet? ... It’s obscene that the super-rich can criminalise protest, while they burn the world’s resources and remain untouched by the law, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

Extreme wealth: if any other condition generated these symptoms, we would call it a mental illness.
My column about why certain very rich people don't care about the living planet, or even, in some cases, their own children.

#NZpol:

Apparently, “the National Lung Cancer Working Group has been gagged on the issue of overturning Smokefree laws”.

Astonishing thing to do. Trying to barrel it through by gagging informed objections?

Absolutely signed. Suggest others add their name too - these ones go on the official record and a request can then be made for an MP to receive them.

EVERY little step counts right in light of this Government. And in my opinion as many people as possible need to make use of ALL of them now.

The quickest way to kill National's plan to allow offshore drilling is for the Greens / TPM to say "we will reverse it. And revoke any permits granted. Also sunset all existing fossil fuel permits".

If you have an elderly relative in New Zealand whose care facility is participating in a school’s Christmas function for seniors, you should be asking what covid safety procedures are in place.

If there are none, and this is likely, demand strong protections. You could regret it otherwise.

'We prayed Helen Clark would fall out of a plane' - Brethren book Inside the Exclusive Brethren during their affliation with Don Brash and National

Luxon thinks it is okay to have an ongoing relationship with the Exclusive Brethren, an organisation rife with abuse, misogny and homophobia. We need separation of religion and state not a PM that embraces it and certainly not the extreme face of it. #AoNZpol newsroom.co.nz/2023/11/20/w...

National's diplomatic fossil fuel problem If National is seen as taking New Zealand two steps backwards for every step in the right direction, it will face increasing pressure at diplomatic summits.

Though high-ambition nations, including NZ, have spent the past year pushing hard for a concrete commitment to a global phase-out of fossil fuel use, the new government's first major action in this area will be to backtrack on oil and gas exploration.

the reframing of “from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” as a genocidal slogan is an incredible feat of gaslighting. the genocidal notion of a nation being free in the geographical area where it exists.

I'm looking forward to the media giving the Greens as much airtime as they gave ACT this past term, what with their significantly higher polling.

Because that will DEFINITELY happen.

Irony is a party that got 11% of the vote that has held a disproportionate amount of power over the past ~20 years wanting a referendum because they think Māori have disproportionate power.

Will be interesting to see if coalition talks can be concluded in less time than it took to count and verify 602K special votes...

If anyone is in a non-watercolour mood my main artistic side-gig (stalled for years, sadly) is acrylic paintings of NZ native birds. Wearing hats. You can find ‘em at my website tworuru.com/.

Hopefully I’ll pick it up again one day.
