That "explosive" nature, however, could potentially be caused - as @arambaut.bsky.social lays out - by a combination of long(ish) term cryptic transmission, linked to sexual networks / sex work, followed by more recent detection and reporting.

For recent outbreaks of Clade Ib in the DRC, similar patters have been seen, although not the same "explosive" nature we're observing in Sierra Leone.

It’s mad. I wrote a few thoughts about it the other day. Since then someone posted that all the grants cancelled to date are ones started under the Biden administration. If this is all some mad political tit-for-tat it’s utterly pathetic and incredibly destructive.

As I understand this, these are contextual analysis with general llm's and not specifically trained llm's on a certain topic. General llm's are worse at this.
Diagnostics is done with specifically trained deterministic Ai what is really different from generative Ai.
Thanks for sharing.
See lots of enthusiasm about generative AI in different areas of medicine. This systematic review shows that optimism is not supported by current evidence, except in urology and dermatology. From promise to validation as a valley of death www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Paper by Phd student Kesha Kroh under guidance of @CarmenEmbregts and @Corine_GvK studying fundamental aspects of infection with different rabies viruses. Rabies is 100% lethal, and understanding why there is no effective host response is crucial pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40208887/
The Wuhan CDC has nothing to do with the origin of COVID-19. Virus genetic engineering and culturing was not their trade (samples were sent to Beijing/Shanghai). They did not have collection of bat viruses from Yunnan. I was told that staff at WCDC did not hear about the outbreak until late Dec.
mag toch allebei?
thank you!

yes, it was wonderful
I think eventually lots of science influences policy. In fact, it is something that is considered when evaluation science programs, to assess impact of the work. They key issue of course is to have clearly delineated roles. Scientists should not step into the shoes of politicians and vice versa
were you there? Missed that. The meeting is so big that it is hard to find anyone. Glad you enjoyed it. I think this is an important topic. Not sure how to deal with it, but I do definitely think we all have a role to play.
thanks Alma. Well...packed....I missed the packed room on Saturday. But honoured with this award.

Incredible treat when traveling back from Vienna. The flight crew @KLM thanked me and invited me into the cockpit for landing. With clear skies, the impressive dashboards and nice conversations, we descended into Amsterdam. What a treat! Thanks team, this was very special
