Really excited to have the new issue of Paleobiology @paleosoc.bsky.social out celebrating the 50th anniversary of #punctuatedequilibria #macroevolution #paleobiology #palaeontology #paleontology @nilese.bsky.social www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

Congratulations to Joe Felsenstein on being awarded the 2026 Mendel Medal!
More on rate-scaling in phenotypic evolution, pointing toward biological explanations, from Brune Kinneberg & Voje. Lots of debate about this pattern, but comes down to how we define "noise" vs. "biology" as represented in models. Important philosophical discussion.

The paper by Gene Hunt (2012) in Paleobiology inspired much of the work behind our paper. It's well worth a read if you haven't already enjoyed this gem: www.cambridge.org/core/journal...
Is it possible to estimate rates of phenotypic evolution that are independent of the time interval covered by the data? In theory, yes โ even when the data are incomplete and biased. But in practice? Not so much. Amazing work by @vildebruhn.bsky.social

Looking for a PhD opportunity? I'm hoping to recruit someone to my group at Durham University to work on a project combining fieldwork and labwork to study speciation in rubyspot damselflies: iapetus.ac.uk/studentships...

Tree evolution is surprisingly quirky! ๐ณ Trees are likely ancestral in many plant groups, often re-evolve on islands, and Arabidopsis can be made tree-like by tweaking a few genes. We revisited what genes really make a tree a tree using comparative genomics. @trhvidsten.bsky.social #trees #evolution
Excited to share our new paper where we find that the rise, decline and fall of clades is not explained by the usual suspects (diversity-dependence, ecological opportunities) but rather by species' insidious loss of macroevolutionary fitness: www.nature.com/articles/s41... 1/3

New paper out in Geology! Cheilostome bryozoans evolved aragonite skeletons dozens of times during the transition from calcite to aragonite seas, in contrast to other marine calcifiers. Fossil occurrence data corroborate the story and help nail down the timeline. doi.org/10.1130/G537...

The Gaza Famine is the worldโs famine. A preventable, predictable famine.
Enough. Ceasefire. Open all crossings, north and south. Let us get food in, unimpeded and at massive scale.
Another incredibly shameful move from the Trump administration. Upending the lives of so many young people to score cheap political points is absolutely unconscionable.

The white noise model is a statistical interpretation of stasis, which distinguishes it from a random walk process.
Stasis is defined as trait evolution similar to a white noise process (variation around a fixed mean). There is no cut-off for how much variation the trait mean can fluctuate around the steady state, so time series that fit stasis can actually show significant evolution (but with low net evolution).
Are you seeking a postdoc opportunity? The Natural History Museum in Oslo is on the lookout for candidates who want to create their own projects. If you're interested in brainstorming project ideas, feel free to reach out! More information here:๐ www.jobbnorge.no/en/available...
Here is our attempt at summarizing the state of the evidence for the punctuated equilibrium hypothesis. The paper is part of a special issue of Paleobiology celebrating the 50th anniversary of the PE Hypothesis. Work led by Gene Hunt. @lhliow.bsky.social www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

4 years ago, @anjaligupta.bsky.social spent a summer in Lund and collected amazing data of #damselflies. Now, the data/results are published doi.org/10.1093/jeb/... @jevbio.bsky.social ky.social. My highlight: we proposed a way to relate present-day selection #microevolution with #macroevolution.
We're super excited to introduce a new article category for @asn-amnat.bsky.social: Inspiring perspectives. In a nutshell, we want these articles to spark lively scientific debates that will inspire future research directions in biology. More info here: www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/full/10....
