I invoked jobs because he’s the most well known, but for an even closer comparison, you can look to Larry Ellison. He was selling things that didn’t exist yet as early as the 1980s
The AI hype machine did not grow out of nowhere. To try to separate it from Silicon Valley history is a rewrite that lets the broader tech industry off the hook
I see what this post is trying to get at, but it’s wrong. The entire dot-com bubble was created because of unfounded hype. And Steve Jobs continued developing the art of hype creation with the iPhone reveal events. He was just better at it than Sam Altman

Happening now! I'm talking about Silicon Valley's long history of militarism on the @notechforapartheid.bsky.social "techlash" stream.

America is losing a talented researcher today.
Rümeysa Öztürk, whose abduction by masked men prompted a search and her eventual release by ICE, has returned to Turkey. She wants to resume a career without "state-imposed violence and hostility."

Will Harvard will seek “viewpoint diversity” in the Business School and some of the most popular undergraduate majors in Arts and Sciences, including Applied Math, Computer Science, Economics, Mathematics, Neuroscience, Psychology, Statistics, and the various Engineering and Biology programs?
"We've ended DEI - but we need you to give $10 million to pay for conservative professors."
With administrators like these, who needs an oppositional anti-intellectual influence campaign conducted over the course of decades by right-wing elites
The MA students at our program put on an entire conference this semester on a shoestring budget— they’re doing the best scholarship they can while we sit in budget meetings or are asked to “reimagine” ourselves out of jobs
It’s honestly shocking that any scholarship still gets conducted at universities, given the circumstances

Barrera said her husband said the smell of human feces in the toilet caused a fellow detainee to vomit and, in turn, created a chain of people vomiting. She said her husband is asthmatic and has not received medication to treat his condition. The lack of medicine and the stress of the overcrowded holding cell has left him short of breath and teetering on the edge of an asthma attack, Barrera said. ICE did not immediately respond to questions on April 10 about the conditions of the Mesa or Phoenix facilities. After the publication of this article, Barrera told The Arizona Republic her husband was transferred to the ICE facility at San Luis Regional Detention Center at about midnight. The San Luis Regional Detention Center is in Southwestern Arizona and has the capacity to hold 700 people.
This is horrific. A U.S. citizen describes the facility in Arizona that her husband was brought to while he waited to be put on a deportation flight. Dozens of people were crammed into tiny cells, there was a "chain of people vomiting" from filthy toilets, no medical care, and only one meal per day.
MASSACHUSETTS!
The social media ban legislation that passed the House is a nightmare for online privacy and safety, would force YOU to upload a gov ID to post online, and would harm LGBTQ youth and undocumented families.

BREAKING: in March 2026, *every single one* of the 1,341 refugees admitted in the United States were white South Africans:
In FY 2026, the U.S. has admitted a total of 4,496 white South Africans, three Afghans (back in November), and nobody else.

Pete Hegseth believes that Jesus guides Tomahawk missiles, even when they hit elementary schools.
I wrote about the roots of his militant faith - from the Crusades to the confederacy - and what they mean for the US and Iran today.
The obvious answer here is that the student protest movement was broadly smeared as anti-semitic and aligned with terrorists, and a variety of institutions from government, media and the universities acted as if that smear was true, threatening, suspending, expelling and even deporting students.
Please explain contemporary American life succinctly.
“I understand we live in a giant city and we have to have rules, and that’s what makes society society,” she says. “But I do have a feeling sometimes I’m just gonna make this one not apply to me."
HELL YEAH
From Michael Milken to Sam Altman, perhaps we should interrogate why our economic system seems to structurally incentivize the rise of grifters….
having it generate passages for his students to read and then started adding topics that they like, such as dinosaurs and Power Rangers. Now these AI passages are a reward in his classroom—when kids complete their work, they can ask for a personalized passage.
Impossible to pick a passage that qualifies for the most nausea-inducing. Having teachers and the teachers’ union advertising for OpenAI and Microsoft is despicable in and of itself but when they get into specifics of how they’re using these products, it’s impossible to maintain composure.
American and Israeli missiles hit Sharif University in Tehran tonight. Often called #Iran’s MIT, the institution has been home to some of the country’s best and brightest minds in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics since 1966. 1/2

The irony is that a lot of it seems to be driven by a sense of intrigue / anxiety around the loss of mainstream media’s relevance and yet…..it’s through their coverage that they boost his cultural footprint
Watching elite mainstream publications raise clavicular’s profile through exoticized coverage is like watching Richard Spencer and the alt right all over again
There's one trait where economists clearly outperform the other social sciences:
