I recommend the whole article, but this paragraph in particular stood out to me. (The larger point, that it's okay to engage with controversial figures but you have to do so in a way that leaves your audience more informed and not less, is also correct.)

This is a good piece on a thorny issue.

…Not that swinging/polyamory/whatevs doesn't involve dealing with conflict in real life, of course. I just want my fantasies to continue forever 😅

(If I want that, I should be watching a straight-up porno, I know, I know…)

I'm watching a movie about swingers and so far it's really hot and I'm worried for when the inevitable dramatic conflict arises because it wouldn't be much of a movie without it… (sigh)

Remember when trigger warnings were the world's greatest threat to our institutions of higher learning, and to their ability to pass on our collective knowledge and heritage as a civilization? I miss those days.

This essay kind of answers my question below. Trump uses neoclassical architecture because he wishes to pervert our founding ideals into a glorification of himself. Let's not let him! bsky.app/profile/tina...

"Though the Roman Republic fell, the ideal survived. Public institutions exist apart from the men who lead them, and conflating the two is the hallmark of tyranny. That ideal profoundly shaped the generation that designed the American constitutional order." Highly recommended read!

Welp, can't say I didn't see it coming, they cut down everyone's salaries about a month ago due to limited runway, but the company I was working for laid me off.

'Against the tide': More Israelis and Palestinians now choose to grieve together The Joint Israeli-Palestinian Memorial Day Ceremony Is Now in Its 21st Year. One of Its Organizers Says That People Are Now Joining Faster After the Loss of Their Loved Ones, Understanding 'They Can't...

I often get the sense that American leftists write off joint Israeli-Palestinian activism as naive kumbaya shit but whenever I read something like this I am blown away by the strength of people who have endured the worst losses possible and yet still show up with compassion for the “enemy”

I guess with Palantir fashposting we can expand this to "and we will run the world regardless of what you think & you will love it, peasant."

Like I've said before, I think AI has interesting & compelling use-cases, but we've got to liberate this technology from being the sole domain of the techbro

Higgins is badly misrepresenting what Mills said. She said she didn't know the details of the resolution but would be concerned if it blocked Iron Dome interceptors (it doesn't). She also unequivocally condemned the Israeli campaign in Gaza as a violation of international law.

(That was sarcastic. I think concern about new data centers is reasonable, blanket bans are not. If that makes me a mealy-mouthed politician-coded type I don't care. The world is complicated, and easy, popular solutions are rare as fuck.)

Can't wait to hear about how Graham Platner would be a better Senator because unlike this woman, who is thinking carefully about the pros and cons of a data-center ban, he would say "woo-eeee, ban all data centers" before ripping off his shirt and cracking open an oyster between his pecs

I think both propositions are of limited utility, but the latter is what I find particularly dubious. (Okay, you can argue that there's deadweight loss from taxation and such, sure, but the GOP has been selling the most cartoonish version of "a rising tide lifts all boats" for generations now.)

I think that with Obama, he'd point to the NYSE, etc. as a sign that the economy is doing well (that the rich doing well _correlates_ with the poor doing well), whereas Reagan was pushing the idea that tax cuts for the rich will help the poor (that the rich doing well _causes_ the poor to do well).…

(I still don't like Reagan for his domestic policy, of course, but that's another subject)

I feel like Republicans have a freer hand to do that kind of stuff than Democrats, owing to the constant expectation that Democrats "prove themselves" on national security while Republicans get a free pass. It's frustrating, but I guess it worked out in this instance.

(Norway has its flaws, too, but 1. I'm less aware of them, not having grown up there, and 2. the US is the one with a fascist-led federal government at the moment, so… (sigh))

Can't I just represent Empire City? 😄 bsky.app/profile/tina...

I snagged this and now I'm stuck. The game asks you to choose a country at startup and I'm stuck between whether I want to represent Norway, my ancestral homeland, or the United States, my country of birth and residence, a country of which I'm quite proud but I also must acknowledge is deeply flawed

If you don't mind me asking: what are some good things to say to my rep, when I call? I feel like I should be saying "don't vote for any bill that does X, Y, or Z" but don't know exactly where those red lines should be. And, I want to avoid any rhetorical potholes I might fall into when winging it 😅

One of the most consistently infuriating things about the criminal legal system is how little anyone in a position of authority cares about determining what does and does not work.
