They wanted to bestow a gift to them but had no actual ability to interact with the physical plane in any tangible way so they decided to shatter their own soul to make their wish of granting the gift of magic to all sentient life in the form of the physically interactable Aether which is just mana

At the beginning of time, after completing both of their tasks, Aether witnessed all of the potentials of all living things and basically fell in love with life as a whole-

Erebus' job at the beginning of time was to give the primoridal chaos a physical form (think the big bang) and hold it together with physics, and Aether's job was to give all sentient life the immaterial things like thoughts, feelings, potential, fate, etc-

so the lore i have for Aether so far is that they are one of two "Original Mythos" (Mythos being the gods of my worlds). Aether is the Myth of Magic, Thoughts, and Feelings, while the other Original Myth is Erebus the Myth of the World, Law, and Creation-
