What is an occupation? Is a quantitative sociology approach different than econometrics?

How many careers do people have over their work lives? We find U.S. workers in the NLSY79 cohort have about 3 careers on average.
On Rolling Downhill, I write about why careers are key sociological concept in understanding economic mobility.
