My 5yo son Aubrey and I and I are on the train. There is a very wholesome Christian-coded family at the next table all making animals out of plasticine. Meanwhile Aubrey is watching Pokémon on his tablet and eating from two different packets of processed snacks at the same time.

When Aubrey was born I had such lofty ideas about gender-neutral parenting and the sensitive boy I was going to raise. Fast forward five years and I’m buying him these for Christmas.

I think a lot of big, baffled questions will be asked of the era we currently live in by future generations, and perhaps none will be bigger and more baffled than "Why did all those people suddenly want to make the insides of their houses so grey and shiny?"
