I know that. What worked for me is to take a 2 months break from my main project and do whatever i wanted to do and i didnt think about my project. Played some games, built smaller games, gone on vacation etc.
After this break my energy to work my game was filled up again.
Hope this can help you!

Didn't post in a while, but still working on my tactical Roguelite RPG with Superheros. Had to refactor some code and make UI Scenes in the last few months. Goal for first half of 2026 is to make actual Art for the Game so i can show something instead of describing.

I would recommend Unity or Godot. Papers Please is a 2D Game, which both Engines can do pretty well (and more). If you want to stick to 2D Games, Gamemaker is good too, but if you want to make something 3D you have to learn another Engine, which can take a while. :)
Thats my goal too! But probably after i released my first game, so i am a little bit more experienced. :)
How far are you into reaching this goal?
The Inventory isn't finished of course, just started coding it today and will use the next few days to refine it and implement an Equipment System too.
The System for Item Generation isnt finished too, so i guess i will have some work to do for the next few weeks. :)
Probably won't do it again tho, it is pretty cool getting something fast, but i prefer coding it myself so i actually know whats going on there.
Which could be done by Vibe Coding too i guess, but coding it myself lets me know for sure what my code is doing. :)
Just implemented a Inventory System for my game. Tried to "Vibe Code" it with an AI (i used Gemini).
It did very well prototyping the Inventory System, but refining it to fit my needs was not something it could do very well.

Now i have a basic display of the AP/MP and resistances of a fighter and a graphical presentation of the initiative-order. Also fixed some graphical problems with my hover tiles. Progress is going smooth :)

Just implemented the "Placing Phase" at the start of each Combat. Was easier than expected ๐ฅฐ

Thats how i do it too! Sometimes it also helps just playing your game and you will notice some things that need improvement.
Just wishlisted your game, i am a sucker for tactical RPGs and your game looks really interesting. :)
Hey, letโs get an intros thread for all of the game devs here! Tell us about yourself, your studio, and/or your current projects! ๐พโฅ๏ธ
Hey, my name is Julian and i am a solo game dev working on a single player Tactical RPG with Superheroes.
Its the first Game i am making, and an really ambitious one, but i am certain i can do it if i have enough time (which i do have right now).
Hello Everyone!
i want to show off the Combat System of the Game i am currently working on. The Combat System is inspired by the MMORPG "Dofus". The Art Style will be like Paper Mario, but everything you see are Placeholder Graphics.
Let me know what you think!

Your game looks really awesome! May i ask what Engine you are using?
I am using Godot and need to implement tooltips at some point too, thats why i ask. :)
โShow me four games that influence YOUR current game projectโ
Its a weird constellation but my current project pics the (in my oppinion) best parts of these games and mixes it together. Hopefully something good will come out of it :)
Just fixed a problem i had for weeks in my combat system. Now i can focus on refining the state system for the combat.
Hard to remember but i think mine was Feena from Grandia 1.
Either her or Peach from Paper Mario 1. ๐
Programmed my own grid system today because i didnt like the Godot GridMap Node. Was easier than expected and can be scaled to fit my needs. Performance is a bit rough tho, but thats no priority for me right now. Tomorrow i can work on the combat system more. :)
Gotcha!
You can use Notion offline too and it will synchronise once youre back online, but you need an account i think. So yeah thats the difference i believe.
Thanks for answering! :)
First time hearing of those two. I am using Notion right now and am quite happy with it.
Is there something these can do which notion cant? Just asking out of curiosity. :)
That looks super clean! Probably have to do something like that too sooner or later. Right now mine is just for the combat system (turn based), it basically switches between different states of the fight. Its not finished yet though ๐คญ
I am working on such an event System myself right now too! It can be very powerful but mine is a mess right now, have to clean up my code first before i continue ๐คญ
I really like number 6 :)
You're very welcome! ๐ฅฐ
Thats so true!
The hardest part was figuring out how everything should be setup in the combat system. Since it will be a tactical combat based on a grid, i had to develop a tactics engine, which is not entirely finished right now but i am very close to finish it ๐
Thank you very much for your reply! Your game sounds very interesting aswell ๐
Programming the combat system is the hardest part right now. I completed a good chunk of it, but there is still a lot to work on. But so far i love the process of developing my own game! ๐ฅฐ
Lastly, if you read this far i guess you might be somewhat interested in my game.
I am a solo dev right now and plan to develop the game mostly solo, but i appreciate every help i can get, so dont be affraid to reach out to me. Likewise, i would be very happy to help you on your project.
- Paper Mario 2 (Art Style, World Navigation)
- Kingdom Hearts (Story)
- World of Warcraft Classic / Diablo 4 (Talent Tree System)
- Dofus / Wakfu (Combat System)
Its an really ambitious project, considering i am a beginner. But i am certain with enough endurance i can do it.
What can i expect from your game?
In its core, it will be a classic RPG like Dragon Quest or Paper Mario 2.
Speaking of Paper Mario 2, lets get to the inspiration for my game in the following section
