Okay so you might see this video with the audio muted. Now imagine how the music must sound like. I urge you to unmute and listen to what it's actually like because I guarantee you you're not prepared for it.

HOW TO USE TINTS IN SILENT MOVIES

First of all, is your tinting literal or metaphorical? Both were used in the silent era.

Literal is like:

It's very different. A lot more intelligible at the cost of being (IMO) kinda literal and colorless in places.

Totally! I mentioned @emilymbender.bsky.social and @alexhanna.bsky.social in the thread, and their book The AI Con lays it out well (as does their podcast Mystery AI Hype Theater 3000).

There was also a great documentary that played at Sundance this year called "Ghost in the Machine."

If we're acknowledging that the AI higher-ups are delusional, then why would we accept their account of the technologies they're selling as thinking machines from the 24th century?

(Harris mentions this objection—that doomerism is hype—then dismisses it without saying why he thinks it's incorrect).

Listened to the whole thing, and you did! I think it was great that you pressed him on the "WHO said that?" point, not to mention the Ketamine thing.

But you never really questioned Harris' (very questionable!) account of AI as unique and hyper-powerful technology. That's ceding a lot of ground.

A List Of Games By Trans People Before 2010

In the spirit of trans visibility, lemme just plug my ongoing project to document as many pre-2010 games as possible that had a trans person on the dev team. You might be surprised by what's on there. There's games going right back to the sixties!

Anyway, I mentioned @emilymbender.bsky.social. Here's her thread on The AI Doc, from just after she saw it. (She was, and presumably is, not a fan).

The glaringly obvious problem he's pointing at has almost nothing to do with AI per se or with tech-as-magic, and everything to do with a tiny class of people who are (1) unfathomably wealthy, (2) intensely incurious, (3) proudly amoral, and (4) increasingly paranoid, insular, and lost in the sauce.

2 weeks ago 1 0 2 0

It's also wild how Harris hand-waves the idea that AI doomerism, which sees the tech as "24th century," is essentially a mode of hype, a marketing tool.

He doesn't explain WHY he doesn't think that's the case. Probably because that is, very very obviously, the case.

I guess my other, @emilymbender.bsky.social and @alexhanna.bsky.social inflected take is that it's honestly pretty irresponsible for @samfragoso.bsky.social to air a guy talking about LLMs "thinking" and "understanding" in hushed, revenant tones. LLMs categorically do not and cannot do those things!

The core thing about Tristan Harris' shtick is that he issues urgent warnings about "eight people" controlling the world, but he ultimately wants to protect the specific people in question and stay in their orbit.

It presents all the same problems as access journalism. It's like, access philosophy.

I don't know: Halo's PvP is certainly a huge part of people's warm-and-fuzzies about the series, and Halo's co-op was kinda magic, wasn't it?

Multiplayer doesn't have to be synonymous with these mushy forevergames that feel more invested in keeping you playing than in what they're like to play.

All of which is that say: that Obama quote refers (in part) to jobs that are pointless AND harmful, AND that would disappear if we solved solvable upstream problems.

There are many jobs that are like that, and many many more jobs with elements that are like that. Too many.

There could be fewer!

Having a bullshit job, or a job that contains a lot of bullshit, is deadening. It truncates the horizon.

And having an economy structured on bullshit (that is, on self-justifying, self-perpetuating busywork that serves no social purpose, or serves one very badly) is similarly deadening.

Graeber is mainly interested in almost like, the SPIRITUAL cost of bullshit jobs.

(The other thing the episode didn't get into is the cognitive/emotional load of pretending that a bullshit job isn't bullshit).

In that context, what Obama is doing in that quote is cutting off most possible futures.
