6/7 For anyone curious, the rarest, most expensive and illusive of these broken bulbs was called the Semper Augustus (meaning always exalted). The highest a singular bulb sold for was 10,000 guilders in January 1637 (the equivalent to today’s $138,000 USD).

5/7 the overall insanity for this flower was called, Tulipmania, and it created the early structure of the speculative market (which is what we essentially still use to this day for buying/selling commodity futures).

4/7 these rare broken bulbs were eventually discovered to be the result of mosaic virus and were banned internationally from all breeding/selling and it’s still illegal to knowingly purchase a broken bulb.

3/7 “broken” bulbs were considered rare due to their unusual flowering/variant designs and often carried astronomical value due to psychotic demands. there were whole crime rings devised to literally rob the rich for a chance at digging up one singular precious bulb!

2/7 Introduced to Europe in the 16th century, tulip bulbs were often used as dowry payments, or to purchase houses and land, and often cost more than a year’s worth of skilled worker’s wages (then approx 300 guilders/to today’s $25,000 USD)

1/7 Originally found in the Tian Shan mountains, tulips were extensively cultivated during the 10th century Persian Empire. The Ottoman Empire then adopted the flower as a symbol of power and wealth and built gardens to showcase their beauty to foreign diplomats/royal visitors.

The last time I felt how I currently feel about writing, I didn’t create anything for over ten years. I don’t want to do that again bc it was paralyzing and miserable and lonely. So now I’m just trying to clear the path of negative obstacles to see if that helps.++
