A quote from Dr. Kate Marvel: "We are trained to be introspective. We are trained to always think: Oh my gosh, that’s a mistake; can I fix this mistake? But that means we also probably waste a lot of mental energy thinking, “What did we do wrong?” when maybe we didn’t do anything that wrong."

I keep thinking about this quote from @drkatemarvel.bsky.social. Climate scientists have been gaslit by so many parties for so long that it has worn on their gifts of critical thinking and introspection. Today, perhaps, anger is lighting new fires. "Maybe we didn't do anything that wrong." Indeed.

To keep climate science alive, researchers are speaking in code Words considered "woke" are vanishing from National Science Foundation proposals. Grist tracked the changes.

I'd venture that a particularly cruel detail here is that some projects were cancelled because they'd used climate language to satisfy Biden-era requirements... and that same language became a death sentence under Trump.

One Illinois state climatologist said: "If we're studying climate change, to not name climate change feels dirty." But a grant can be the difference between a graduate student getting a paycheck or getting let go.

Horizontal bar chart titled "The dirty words of federal science funding," showing percent change from peak to 2025. DEI is down 100%, equity and environmental justice each down 93%, climate change down 77%, greenhouse gas down 67%.

Of course, climate language isn't even the most toxic category. "DEI" has vanished entirely from NSF grants. "Equity" and "environmental justice" are each down 93%. These are the new forbidden words of federal science.

Alt text: Line chart showing percent change from 2021 baseline in climate-related language in NSF grant summaries. "Extreme weather" rises 69% by 2025 while "climate change" falls 74%, "global warming" 81%, and "environmental justice" 92%.

NSF grants mentioning "climate change" dropped 74% from their 2021–24 peak. Meanwhile, "extreme weather" is up 69%. The substitution is intentional; researchers are quietly coding their language to survive the new funding climate.

🌎🔥📝 American climate scientists are rewriting their own research proposals, scrubbing out words they've used for decades just to keep their funding alive. New from me, Kate Yoder, and Ayurella Horn-Muller for @grist.org: grist.org/language/cli... (1/n)

No, I do not want to be a “creator journalist” or “influencer” or run a newsletter by myself

I want health insurance and a decent editor to work under and a team of comrades to work with, attend union meetings with, do good with
