Multi-dimensional Mortality (MDMx): Sex-Age-Specific Model Life Tables, Fitting, Prediction from Summary Mortality Indicators, and Forecasting Demographers rely on a variety of tools and methods to work with mortality schedules - model life tables, fitting methods, summary-indicator prediction, and forecasting - largely developed independent...

There’s a long tradition of using the SVD matrix factorization to model and forecast mortality. I used the higher-order SVD to decompose a 4-way tensor of mortality and explore the possibilities that this gives us.

LEdecomp: Decompose Life Expectancy by Age (and Cause) A set of all-cause and cause-specific life expectancy sensitivity and decomposition methods, including Arriaga (1984) &lt;<a href="https://doi.org/10.2307%2F2061029" target="_top">doi:10.2307/2061029<...

Over a dozen ways to decompose life expectancy, all in one (we hope) friendly interface. Please have a look at the LEdecomp R package cran.r-project.org/web/packages... See the function LEdecomp() for access to all of them. If we left something out, please shout! #rstats #demography #mortality

#LifeExpectancy rose rapidly in the first half of the 20th century. But will those born between 1939 and 2000 benefit from these rapid gains in #longevity? A recent study suggests that none of these #generations will reach 100 years of age on average. 1/2 www.demogr.mpg.de/go/LifeExpectancy2025

In this piece in honour of Jim Vaupel I pull the veil from hidden heterogeneity. I show how the observed distribution of frailties changes in a cohort of newborns over the first month of life and quantify mortality selection and its impact on the age pattern of neonate mortality. Fully reproducible.

🚨 The end of an era for global health data — and a defining crossroads.

In Jan 2025, the DHS Program—the backbone of health & demographic data in 90+ countries—was terminated after US aid cuts of up to 84%.

Our researchers & global collaborators reflect on it in a recent pre-print🧵
